AFC East Champs Again? Miami Dolphins Have Too Many Holes To Repeat

Lee FeldmanMay 9, 2009

The Miami Dolphins are the defending champs of the AFC East, but do they have what it takes to repeat?  In one word, no.

The Fins are coming of an 11-5 season but they may have too many holes to repeat.

Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland did a fairly good job in filling some needs in this years draft, but it wasn't enough. The Dolphins picked Illinois corner Vonte Davis with the 25th pick which filled a major need, but fell short filling the rest of the holes.

The fish still don't have what any reasonable person would consider an #1 receiver.  Returning is Ted Ginn Jr, who is entering his crucial 3rd year. Ginn is still trying to prove that he is worth of the 9th over-all pick in the 2007 draft.

He still needs to improve his route running and needs to avoid the drops that plagued him last year.  Ginn has the reputation of being "soft" among Dolfans.

Other than Ginn the fins have Greg Camarillo, who is coming back from Knee surgery, and the surprise of last season Devon Bess. Then there is Ernest Wilford, who didn't even dress for a game last year. How do you spell bust?

The Dolphins did add some receivers in this years draft, but none worth wasting ink on yet. Well see where Brian Hartline and Patrick Turner are after training camp.

The Dolphins are a bit thin at nose guard too. They did not take one in this years draft which leaves them with Jason Ferguson, who is entering his 14th year.

When you add the toughest schedule in football to a team that has blaring holes, it smells of 8-8.  Did I mention that the Dolphins get to face T.O twice this year?

Vonte Davis will be tested early and often. You're not in the Big 10 anymore Mr. Davis. Last year the Fins got to play a sorry NFC West and had the luxury of a last place schedule. Not to mention no Tom Brady in New England last season.

There is a bright future for the Dolphins, but it isn't this year. Don't be surprised if you don't see Chad Henne under center halfway through the season.  Don't panic Miami, that is a good thing.
