Liverpool Transfer News: Reds Would Be Wise to Let Luis Suarez Go

Jeremy FuchsJun 8, 2018

It seems, at least for now, that theย Luis Suarez drama may be coming to an end.

According to the Press Association (h/tย guardian.co.uk), manager Brendan Rodgers said that Suarez will stay in the club "unless something drastic happens."

What that drastic event could be is not yet clear. According to John Cross of the Daily Mirror,ย Liverpool have already rejectedย Arsenal's bid ofย ยฃ30 million.

However, Mark Irwin and Phil Thomas of The Sun report that Arsenal are prepared to increase their bid toย ยฃ40 million. In that same report, though, Irwin and Thomas note that Liverpool have valued Suarez atย ยฃ55 million.ย

In addition, according to Jim Daly of the Daily Mirror,ย Real Madrid have made aย ยฃ25 million bid for Suarez:

"

Real Madrid have decided they will pay no more than ยฃ25m, whileย Arsenal's opening bidย of ยฃ30m was rejected but they are ready to come back with more.

Rodgers, who gave Suarez time off from theย Anfield team'sย pre-season after the Confederations Cup, claimsย the 26-year-old Uruguayanย is still part of his plans...although left the door open by suggestions "nobody is bigger than the club.

"

Suarez still has three years left on his contract, meaning that they do not have to sell him. In addition, Suarez is the team's best player, as he scored 30 goals last season. It would be a significant loss if they did let him go.

But those 30 goals do not come without drama. He still has to miss games due to a suspension for biting Chelsea'sย Branislav Ivanovic.

He has also made it clear that he no longer wants to play at Anfield. "I donโ€™t feel comfortable here anymore โ€” they know it, so I think it is understandable that I leave," he told The Sun in late May.ย

Besides wanting to leaveโ€”and probably playing worse next season as a resultโ€”he hasn't been able to take his team to the next level. Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League last season.

Even with Suarez, they are still far behind the top teams, like Manchester United and Manchester City.

He's a great player and has been dominant on the international stage with Uruguay. However, one player does not make the team, as Rodgers intimated.

For all the antics, and for the fact that they could get multiple players for the roughlyย ยฃ40 million they would receive for Suarez, it's simply not worth it. Liverpool would be better off letting Suarez go, so he no longer drags down the club.

With the money they would receive, they could focus on improving their club in multiple ways.

Replacing Suarez is not easy and Liverpool will have to do so in the aggregate. Sometimes, though, that approach can turn out more successful. By putting the focus on the team first, Liverpool may end up with a better season than if they end up keeping Suarez.
