Manchester City: Stevan Jovetic the Key to Future Manchester City Success

Cronan YuJul 20, 2013

Fiorentina's young, talented star Stevan Jovetic is now officially a Manchester City player after finalising the deal and passing a medical, as revealed by Goal

His imminent transfer sees the end of five promising seasons in Florence. Although he was never able to fully showcase his talent, he showed that he is definitely a player for the future, and his move in order to get his career back on track could not have come a better time.

However, he leaves Italy on a sour note. In June, he emphatically declared in an unauthorised interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, per Football Italia, his intentions to not only leave the club but to also make a switch to Fiorentina's biggest rivals, Juventus. It was an interview which angered both fans and the club's board members alike, and it proved to be the last straw.

And with that in mind, it comes as no surprise that Fiorentina opted to sell their striker to Manchester City. As for the Citizens, it may prove to be a risky piece of transfer business after all.

The 23-year-old striker has proven he is still not a prolific goal scorer, and his goal-scoring exploits are a far cry from those of his predecessors. During his time in Italy, he made 116 official first-team appearances in Serie A and scored only 35 goals, with 14 strikes being his single-season high. However, he has seemingly improved his striker instincts in front of goal in the past few seasons and is set for a magnificent season in England.

Renowned for his great dribbling skills, technique and his great ability in using both feet, Jovetic's past injuries somewhat marred his time with Fiorentina, which included an anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for the entire 2010-11 season. However, Jovetic has put on mass and has been able to hone his skills both on and off the ball, which has allowed him to be more of a complete forward.

Due to his creativity, Jovetic will be tasked with filling the void left behind by the recently departed Carlos Tevez. Last season, according to Squawka, Jovetic scored 13 goals at a conversion rate of 14.9. On the other hand Tevez scored 11 at a conversion rate of 14.7.

And although he may be effective in front of goal, Jovetic tends to thrive when playing deeper in the pitch and helping to create chances for the lone striker. For example, according to Squawka, Jovetic was able to create 55 chances last season whilst Tevez created 61. And with Manuel Pellegrini as coach, who prefers a more free-flowing passing system in his 4-2-3-1 formation, Jovetic will definitely prove a handy player; a guy who can score goals at crucial times whilst chipping in with assists.

And although the move seems rosy, there surely will be critics questioning his move. Nevertheless, City supporters should be enthusiastic that a player held with such high regard is arriving at Eastland’s. He is the player City need to continue building on from previous successes.
