How Good Is This Arsenal Team?

Jo DalhouseMay 8, 2009

After Tuesday’s disappointment, Arsenal fans face the reality of a fourth trophy-less season many Arsenal fans are questioning the future of this young team.

On Tuesday, the way Arsenal lost was disappointing. Manchester United stunned the Gunners with two early goals which created an impossible mountain to climb. The real crime however took place at Old Trafford where the Arsenal players lacked the "bottle" to fight Manchester United putting on one of the most spineless performances put on by an Arsenal team.

So really how good are arsenal, let's have a look at the players that pull on the shirt, week in week out.

Almunia: A constantly improving goalkeeper, this season has justified Wengers faith in his ability. World class save against Tevez in semi final. Late bloomer next season will be even better.

Sagna: Great defender, lost his edge this season, needs to get the hunger and drive back. When on form is the easily the best right back in the country.

Clichy: Exceptional talent, has not had a great season, partly down to injuries but also starting to make mistakes due to lack of concentration. Gael is one of the best left backs in the country. Sorely missed by Arsenal in tail end of the Season.

Toure: Another very good defender, has not been the same since the African nations cup last year, needs to add a bit more structure to his game. A good competitor which is a rare and invaluable quality at Arsenal. Toure will be heavily involved in the future success of Arsenal.

Gallas: World class, born winner. Unfortunately Gallas and Toure do not compliment each other as they should. Before the infamous game at Birmingham was a great captain, pushing and not accepting excuses of this young team. Needs to take control of the back line.

Djourou: Young strong fast defender, loads of potential, will be a great defender, every year gets better and better.

Eboue: has a love hate relationship with the Arsenal fans, still is a useful player. Very quick and generally has a good touch together with the ability to beat players. Has now converted to a midfielder no longer much good as a right back.

Walcott:  Not the finished article some would leave you to believe, very quick also his touch is getting better and better. Needs to shoulder more responsibility in his role as a winger, and with his talent should be making more of an impact on games. If Walcott fulfils his potential there is no limit on what he can achieve. Watch out Ronaldo!

Fabregas: The gem. Amazing talent, needs time to grow into captain’s role. His game is getting better and the players seem to respect him. Next season will be vital to arsenals success. Has to remain at Arsenal at least for the next few years under guidance of Wenger and will become a world beater.

Nasri: Another talented player, very good technically with an eye for goal. Still settling into the premier league. We have not seen the best of him yet.

Denilson: Unfairly criticized this season, had big boots to fill after Flamini’s exit. Has competed against all midfields this season and has never been embarrassed. Has a great future ahead of him, as for first choice next season maybe needs a bit more time.

Diaby: Clearly has the talent, when he is good he is very good, when he is bad it is not pretty. Terrible game against Manchester United in first leg, seemed overwhelmed by the occasion. If Diaby becomes more consistent could become a great player and the difference between Arsenal.

Song: Has really grown this season especially towards the end of the campaign. His form filling in the gap Flamini left coincides with great league run. Could be the permanent solution.

Ramsey:  Hugely talented, needs more time.

Arshavin: World class, Arsenal are a different side when this man is playing. Unstoppable on his day. Imagine what he will be like when he settles into the pace of this league.

Rosicky: Will he be the same player again? Will he play for Arsenal again? Let’s just hope this extremely talented player will be back.

Vela: Amazing talent clearly will be a great. Will next year be his year?

Bendtner: Confident young man, still not quite there as a player. May not make the grade at Arsenal.

Adebayor: Works hard for the team although he does not get much credit for the work he does, too hit and miss this season. Only had one really good season at Arsenal, next season will determine how good he really is. One day will wake up in Milan and realise he could have been a great player.

Van Persie:Probably the most gifted player at Arsenal. Has not translated that onto the pitch. Must do better, capable of so much more.

When you look at all the players at Arsenal it is clear they have the talent to win the league next season all will be needed will be a few tweaks.

Twenty-one games in the league unbeaten is hugely impressive and just a sign of what this team can achieve. And if this young team stays together they will win many things in the near future. Arsene Wenger is not just building for today but for years of success.
