God Bless You Roger Goodell

This article was inspired by You Don't Pay Them Like Tom Brady, Until They Play Like Tom Brady written by Bleacher Report's Joshua Lagan.

Recently NFL Commissioner has stated adamantly that he is looking to cut back on rookies getting huge contracts. He feels that veterans who have proven what they can do deserve to get to be paid better. My reaction to that was AMEN! It is about time.

His main argument was that if a guy doesn't pan out, the organiztion still has to pay him. Then they have less money to be able to pay the proven veterans who deserve it.

Let's look at this years number one pick. Mathew Stafford can be a total disaster and still get $41 million guaranteed. That is a good deal for him. Is that a good deal for the Lions? Only time will tell, but odds are probably not.

There have been so many guys who have had it all handed to them like this. Many end up being busts. Imagine if they had to earn their contract with how they played at the professional level. Imagine how much more they would appreciate it.

Maybe there would be fewer busts. Not only do these guys get money handed to them but also starting spots. The GM can't justify not playing a guy who is making the money he is. Therefore, imagine if all these kids had to earn their way on the field. Would they appreciate it more? I think so.

This is also something that could trickle down to college. Imagine if they realized that they could no longer get a contract handed to them that would set them for life. Imagine if these kids actually started taking their education more seriously. Imagine if they realized that the degree is important so if they don't succeed at the NFL level, they at least have something else to fall back on.

I hope Mr. Goodell is successful in doing this. Either way, God Bless You Roger Goodell for trying to do the right thing.
