Vikings Still a QB Away From Competing?

Mike GumtoMay 8, 2009

The Vikings attempts to lure Brett Favre away from retirement apparently has failed.  Or maybe, Brett just played the Vikings & Packers to get what he really wanted from Green Bay. Clearly, $20 million endorsement deal may have been off the table had Minnesota not pursued Favre.

We may never know what really went down but we do know this: Minnesota's season will once again come down to QB presence and that is a big question mark as of this writing.

Let's face it, Tarvaris Jackson is very, very unproven yet. He has yet to show he can start in the NFL. He also has yet to complete 60 percent of his passes in a season in the NFL. Not many QB's start without achieving that stat. Childress put all his eggs in T-Jack's basket.

He moved up and traded for him three years ago, and now it's do or die possibly for both of them this season. Another dismal effort not only would seal T-Jack's demotion to the bench, but might cost Childress his job. And by all means, it should. He was the one who not only traded up to grab TJ, he took him about three rounds to early if you listen to the draft experts.

Childress seems to be one stubborn coach. Nothing wrong with that-while your winning and improving. The Vikings did just that last year thanks to Gus Frerotte who somehow got the Vikings to finish 10-6 and win their division. Then suddenly, Childress after a Frerotte injury, put TJ into the spotlight again.

And TJ went on to play relatively well the last 4 games of the regular season. Suddenly, TJ looked like he may have learned something while sitting on the pine for over half the season. Then the awful Eagle's playoff game where he proved once again to be inefficient.

So now here we sit in May. They pursued Favre, and at this moment he does not seem like a likely option. And mentally, how does this affect TJ and Rosenfels after the attempt to land Favre?

The Vikings are still unsure who the starting QB is. Sage Rosenfels was signed to compete for the starting job. A career backup who should push TJ for the starting position. Again, how does the Favre mess effect him mentally after being brought in to challenge for the position.

And will it be enough?  Did the Vikings miss their window of opportunity by not pursuing Jay Cutler? Guys like AP, Jared Allen, and Kevin Williams appear to be in their prime years right now. Will that window close before they can get a proven QB who knows how to win and someone who can lead this team that is full of talent?

Childress has his hands full.  You have the second easiest schedule in the NFL this year.  You have arguably the best RB in the league on your team. And you have an awesome defense and solid skill players on offense that anything less than a division title, and playoff run to me is a failure.

This season is big for everyone involved. Throw in the stadium situation and its even bigger. A bad season, and we could be looking at the LA Vikings very, very soon...Tommy Kramer anyone?
