Chelsea Transfer News: David Moyes' Comments About Rooney Give Hope to Blues
There was a time when new Manchester United manager David Moyes and Wayne Rooney appeared to see eye-to-eye.
This doesn't appear to be that time.
Moyes said over the weekend, per ESPNFC.com:ย "Overall, my thought on Wayne is that if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie we are going to need him. I want as many options as possible."
According to the report, Rooney was left "angry and confused" by Moyes' comments.
Now, Chelsea has confirmed that it made an official bid for Rooney, although the club denied offeringย ยฃ10 million plus Juan Mata or David Luiz, which was previously rumored, via ESPNFC.com.
Asked whether it was "Rooney or bust" this summer, Blues manager Jose Mourinho replied, "Yes," via ESPNFC.com.
Rooney, who notched 12 goals and 10 assists in 27 games (22 starts) for United last season, has long been rumored to be transferred over the summer, based on his reported request for a transfer late last season. But until now, Moyes had appeared to convince the 27-year-old forward that he would still be a big part of the club.
Now, perhaps a slight slip of the tongue has United in deep water with Rooney. Funny how things can change so quickly.
In the end, a couple of sentences from Moyes may push Rooney toward Chelsea.
Such is the wild world of the transfer window, when stars demand moves, back off, then demand moves again. It's a hectic, back-and-forth period that can leave clubs and fans alike pulling their hair out, wondering if the madness will ever end.
While Rooney may not be as important to United as in previous years because of recent additions to the roster (including van Persie), you can bet he played a pivotal role in the club's run to the Premier League title last season. He was a big part of United's pace offensively, exemplified by his balance of goals and assists.
Of course, Rooney would mean even more to a Chelsea club that finished third to United and Manchester City last season.
Let the madness continue.
