Summer Transfer Window Gossip: Wayne Rooney, Bernard, Luiz Gustavo, Cesc, More
It's time for another roundup of all the latest transfer news in the world of football, and Wednesday's offerings bring us a number of notable stars.
We've got the latest on the increasingly interesting Wayne Rooney situation, an update on Cesc Fabregas and news on two Brazilians who could be en route to the Premier League.
Read on for all the biggest deals involving the top teams and players around Europe.
Wayne Rooney Latest
1 of 6It looks like Wayne Rooney might have played his last game for Manchester United, but we're no nearer to finding out the terms of his exit.
Ben Smith of BBC Sport reports that Chelsea made a bid for him of £10 million plus either Juan Mata or David Luiz, adding that Manchester United immediately rejected the offer. The report also indicates that Chelsea have intimated that no players were involved in the bid.
Much remains to be worked out before Rooney is granted a transfer, but recent comments from manager David Moyes do not suggest the forward will be involved heavily in the first-team scene. It's those comments that have left the attacker distressed.
Liverpool in for Bernard
2 of 6Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph reports that Liverpool are looking at Brazilian starlet Bernard in their search to sign a new attacking midfielder.
The Reds recently missed out on signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who went to Borussia Dortmund. It is believed that Bernard has a release fee of around £20 million, which would be attainable for Liverpool.
They will again face big competition to sign the player, with the likes of Porto and Arsenal said to be interested.
Chelsea Target Mikel Replacement
3 of 6TalkSPORT report that Chelsea are looking to offload defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel this summer, and Bayern Munich's Luiz Gustavo is the man they want to replace him.
A £16 million offer would be needed to get Gustavo away from Bayern, last season's treble-winning German champions, but he still has two years remaining on his current contract.
Gustavo can also play left-back but is now a fixture for club and country in a defensive midfield role, which is where he operated for Brazil in the Confederations Cup.
Cesc Transfer Would Be United Record
4 of 6David McDonnell of Mirror Football reports that Manchester United will break their transfer record to obtain Barcelona attacking midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
United would have to pay at least £31 million for that to be the case, but the report mentions that Cesc's priority appears to be to remain a Barca player for the coming season.
Cesc cost Barcelona £25 million two years ago, and the report indicates that the Catalan club would want to make a profit on that fee from any deal. He is the second Barcelona player to be targeted by Manchester United this summer after Thiago Alcantara, who eventually went to Bayern Munich.
Kevin Strootman
5 of 6Kevin Strootman's transfer saga looks like coming to an end, with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting (in Italian) that he is to join AS Roma on July 19 for a medical and to sign a contract.
The PSV midfielder has long been chased by some of Europe's top sides, and he now appears to be destined for Serie A with his big move.
The same report indicates Roma will also sign young Guingamp midfielder Gilbert Imbula for €6 million.
Quick Kicks
6 of 6Gary Jones of the Daily Star reports that Manchester United, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have all made bids for Roma defender Marquinhos. Manchester City and Chelsea are also interested.
Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reports Roma and Lyon will bid around £7 million for Gervinho, but an exchange involving Yoann Gourcuff might give the French side sway.
Manchester City and Sevilla have come to an agreement over the transfer of Alvaro Negredo, with the deal worth around €28 million in total, according to Marca.
Marca also report that Raul Albiol is to have a medical with Napoli ahead of his move from Real Madrid, which should cost about €12 million.
Simon Johnson at the London Evening Standard says that Marouane Fellaini would prefer to move to Manchester United ahead of Arsenal.
The Daily Mail's Simon Jones reports that Joleon Lescott is to be handed a new deal at Manchester City and that the club might pay up to £20 million for Real Madrid's Pepe.
Hannah Duncan at Metro reports that Spurs are close to moving for Real Betis attacker Alvaro Vadillo.
Finally, the Southern Daily Echo reports that Southampton are interested in Ryad Boudebouz, who would be open to the move. The report also suggests the club are interested in Fabio Quagliarella, whose wages might be too high for the Saints.
