All-Star Game Lineup 2013: Getting to Know Tuesday's Under-the-Radar Starters

Patrick ClarkeJul 16, 2013

The National League will take aim at a fourth straight victory over the American League on Tuesday at Citi Field in New York, site of the 84th edition of the MLB All-Star Game.

On Monday, Major League Baseball announced on Twitter the starting lineups for both sides, with Detroit's Max Scherzer and New York Mets star Matt Harvey each getting the starting nod on the mound:

Here we'll take a closer look at Tuesday's starting lineup and highlight a trio of under-the-radar All-Stars worth knowing before the first pitch.

J.J. Hardy, American League, SS

Veteran shortstop J.J. Hardy will make his second career All-Star appearance on Tuesday, but many baseball fans outside of Baltimore haven't been keeping up with the Tucson native.

Hardy is sporting a .982 fielding percentage through the first half of the season and has 247 assists to just seven errors. The 30-year-old has made some spectacular plays in the field as well, making diving catches and stops to help the Orioles remain in the AL East pennant race.

Hardy, who made the All-Star team as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2007, is only batting .251 through 96 games this season, but he does have 52 RBI and 16 home runs to his name.

Only Chris Davis and Adam Jones rank above Hardy in those categories among Orioles players this season.

Michael Cuddyer, National League, DH

Michael Cuddyer was named an All-Star for the first time in 2011 but is set to make his second appearance in the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday as a designated hitter for the National League.

The Colorado Rockies veteran played a decade with the Minnesota Twins, peaking with 32 home runs during the 2009 season. But even at age 34, Cuddyer can still swing the bat with some force.

He advanced to the second round of the Home Run Derby on Monday night at Citi Field, crushing 15 long balls before finally being eliminated.

The versatile right-hander from Virginia has seen time at first base and in right field this season for the Rockies but has been absolutely phenomenal at the plate, where he's batting .330 with 16 homers and 55 RBI to this point.

Matt Harvey, National League, SP

The National League's starting pitcher on Tuesday night, New York Mets ace Matt Harvey is set to receive plenty of applause from those in attendance at Citi Field, but for a number of baseball fans outside of the Big Apple, the 24-year-old remains a mystery.

Harvey burst onto the scene at the start of the season, beginning the year with a 5-0 record and sporting an impressive 1.56 ERA through the month of April. Harvey is 7-2 with a 2.35 ERA heading into the All-Star Game and hasn't pitched in over a week. That's bad news for the American League bats, which have produced just two runs combined in the past three All-Star Games.

The New London, Conn., native played his college baseball at North Carolina and made his major league debut for the Mets a year ago after the All-Star break.

Keep in mind that only two other pitchers in baseball (Clayton Kershaw and Jeff Locke) have a better ERA than Harvey this season.
