Johnny Manziel's Sister Tweets Her Displeasure of ESPN's Joe Schad

Brian LeighJun 4, 2018

Johnny Manziel has stirred the pot with his Twitter account this offseason, amassing 378,000 followers (more thanย Texas A&M University, Texas A&M football, Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin and the Southeastern Conference combined, per ESPN's Ivan Maisel) and sending out occasional, cryptic,ย incendiaryย messages.

That Twitter controversy gene, it appears, might run in the Manziel family.

Johnny Football's younger sister, Meri, took issue with a recent ESPN report by Joe Schad and used her own account to voice her displeasure.

The report in question was published Tuesday morning and titled "Source: Johnny Manziel Apologizes." It came on the the heels of Manziel's early departure from the Peyton Manning Passing Academy, which may or may not have been because of a hangover.

As Schad explains:

"

Manziel, who is scheduled to speak at SEC media days Wednesday, was "very upset" as he headed home from the academy and has privately conceded that he needs to continue to mature, the source said.

"

That appears to be the part Meri took offense with, firing back with a Twitter shot about how, if Schad wasn't actually in the car on the way home, he could possibly know the content of her family's discussion?

This is just the latest episode of a farcically public offseason for Manziel. He's made news even when there was no news to be made, calling into question his leadership, his maturity and his commitment to A&M football.

ESPN Radio personality Paul Finebaum recently likened his offseason to last week's ridiculous, Twitter-baiting SyFy channel movie "Sharknado," saying:

"

I feel like it's Thursday night again and I'm watching Sharknado. You can't take your eyes of the screen. It's a train wreck, but it is very compelling, and it's also very disturbing for many reasons.

"

Manziel, of course, earned this fame by becoming the first ever freshman to win the Heisman trophy last year, throwing for 3,706 yards, rushing for 1,410 more and combining for 47 touchdowns. Head coach Kevin Sumlin forbade him, per team rules, from speaking with the media during the regular season, but once the leash came off, Manziel couldn't keep himself away from the spotlight.

According to Oscar Wilde, "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

After a summer spent making headlines from College Station to Cabo,ย those appear to be words that Johnny Footballโ€”and now his little sisterโ€”has come to live by.
