Luis Suarez Transfer: Would Liverpool Striker Even Consider Joining Arsenal?

Blake BirtJun 1, 2018

After several years of holding their purse strings tight and infuriating fans with their meekness in the transfer market, Arsenal are looking to make a splash this offseason with reports of a £35m bid for star Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, according to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail.

Over the past two years, Arsene Wenger has received slap after slap in the face, with the Frenchman watching on as players he nurtured from raw talent to superstars walk out the door to bigger pay packets and promises of glory.

The departures of Samir Nasri, Alex Song, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie shook the club to the core and threatened to label Arsenal with the tag of a "selling" club.

Arsenal’s head honchos have apparently decided to make a statement of intent by bringing in a big-name player to give the Emirates a much needed morale boost.

The decision to target a marquee signing such as Suarez is a refreshing change of pace for the Gunners, although the Uruguayan’s statements in recent times imply that this potential transfer might turn out to be just another unfulfilled rumour.

In an interview in June, via Andy Hunter of The Guardian, Suarez blamed the English media as his main reason for seeking a move from Anfield. He claimed he was being harassed by the press and had no privacy in his personal life.

Both points are probably valid, but it’s hard to imagine the problem ending with a move to Arsenal. The club is based in the nation’s capital, where the scrutiny on Suarez will only be amplified. If Suarez did agree to a move to Arsenal, it would both contradict himself and ensure that his relationship with Liverpool would be forever tarnished.

There is no doubt that Arsenal is an attractive proposition, with a big stadium, a well-respected manager and a maturing team. But all of that is largely irrelevant if we believe Suarez and his stated reasons for wanting a change.

Arsenal's bid definitely feels like a long shot, and there could be another reason behind this audacious move.

The club's long-mooted transfer for Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain has stalled as the striker waits for a meeting with new boss Carlo Ancelotti before deciding where his future lies.

With this in mind, Arsenal’s bid for Suarez could be viewed as a tactic designed to put pressure on Real to push through Higuain’s transfer.

The transfer window throws up plenty of intrigue and plot twists, and it will definitely be fun to see who ends up where.
