Manchester United Transfer News: Robert Lewandowski Snub Is Good News for Club

Tom SunderlandJun 8, 2018

In the last year or so, a move to Manchester United is one thatโ€™s been laid ahead of Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski more than any other.

Starting just before Euro 2012, the Polish forward was associated with a move to the Theatre of Dreams, presumably off the back of the prolific form he showed in tying up a second consecutive Bundesliga title for the Black and Yellows.

However, it was recently announced by Jurgen Klopp that any such transfer is now nigh impossible due to the fact that Lewandowski will join Bayern Munich next summer for free.

Speaking to Welt am Sonntag (h/t John Drayton of the Daily Mail), the Black and Yellows manager confirmed what many believed to already be the case, but had little grounds to go on in labelling as โ€œofficialโ€:

"

I think it is a known fact that Robert is going to play for Bayern after the upcoming season. The only question is how to shape the time until then.

That is our concern and it is our commitment to our fans and members to ensure that we will have a more competitive team in the upcoming season.

And now we want to prove that, with a quality player like Robert, we can be successful in the coming year. Our results in the coming season is what we're all about. I know that Robert and I see it the same way.

"

On the one hand, United have lost out on one of the most fearsome scoring talents in Europe right now. A man who scored four goals in one meeting against Real Madrid last season, Lewandowski is bound to be put to full use at Bayern Munich, should the move come to fruition as Klopp supposes.

However, the fact that โ€œLewyโ€ is sticking around at Signal Iduna Park for next season also means that nobody else can lure him before his contract expires.

Chelsea were reported by the Mirror as recently as this week as holding an interest in the Pole but will presumably not land their man as a result of Dortmundโ€™s stubbornness.

Looking at the Premier League squads as things stand, Manchester United have the strongest front line in the division.

While Manchester City have sold Carlos Tevez to Juventus, Arsenal endure their striker troubles and Chelsea attempt to coerce past form out of Fernando Torres, the Red Devils still boast the talents of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and even Danny Welbeck.

Of course, having the best strikers is only some of the battle. One could argue about those managers who have a better chain of supply than David Moyes, but to say United could again finish next season as highest scorers would be far from unrealistic.

In truth, Moyes didnโ€™t need a player like Lewandowski in his ranksโ€”at least not right now.

As has been the case at Old Trafford for some years now, a formation relying largely on the work of its wingers along with one (usually rather prolific) striker is the one of choice for United.

Van Persieโ€™s ability assuredly allows him to play outside the realm of centre forward, but his best work is done down the middle, concentrated as the focal point of an attack and not shifted out to the side.

Of course, thatโ€™s not to say Lewandowskiโ€™s arrival couldnโ€™t have signalled a change for the club, but given their acquisition of wide man Wilfried Zaha, that might be considered unlikely.

With the forward now remaining in his current location, United can devote resources to another area they might feel is in need of strengthening, rather than splurging perhaps for the sake of it.
