Chelsea Transfer News: What Missing Out on Robert Lewandowski Means for Blues

Tom SunderlandJun 1, 2018

A key component in the superstar transfer carousel a great deal of people are hoping will ensue this summer, Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has moved to end any talk of Robert Lewandowski leaving the club this summer.

With his contract set to expire next summer, Lewandowski has become hot property in the eyes of a few European clubs, namely the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Blues’ lack of a prolific striker is arguably the biggest concern by their standards heading into the new season. Demba Ba and Fernando Torres provided the main forward targets under Rafa Benitez last term, but ultimately fell short of what Chelsea have come to expect in the last decade or so.

Talking to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, via John Drayton of the Daily Mail, Klopp explained the situation regarding his star striker, revealing just what many supposed would be the eventual outcome:

"

I think it is a known fact that Robert is going to play for Bayern after the upcoming season. The only question is how to shape the time until then. That is our concern and it is our commitment to our fans and members to ensure that we will have a more competitive team in the upcoming season.

"

So, having already signed Mario Götze, the most valued player to come out of Borussia Dortmund for some years, Bayern Munich will once again poach from the greatest threat to their Bundesliga dominance next summer, too, it seems.

ESPN confirmed the news on Twitter:

With that being the case, one can expect Jose Mourinho’s attacking targets to pick up in terms of intensity when it comes to speculation.

Napoli’s Edinson Cavani, reported by Sky Sports' Nadia Carminati as close to sealing a move to Paris Saint-Germain, may also be beyond the Blues’ reach. That would appear to leave the likes of Stevan Jovetic and Mario Gomez of Fiorentina and Bayern, respectively, as prime suspects.

Of course, one option who’s easy to overlook is Romelu Lukaku, the 20-year-old wunderkind who managed to net 17 goals and make seven assists in just 20 Premier League starts while on loan with West Brom last season.

According to Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph, Roman Abramovich has ordered Mourinho to make use of the club’s academy in bringing about future success, a decision undoubtedly influenced by the impending introduction of Financial Fair Play.

Having already proved he has what it takes to perform in the English top flight, Lukaku could thrive with the ample supply he’s bound to receive at Stamford Bridge. It’s just a question of whether or not he’ll receive his opportunity.
