UFC 162 Results: What's Next for Main Card Winners

Matt JuulJun 8, 2018

After reigning for nearly six years as the UFC's middleweight champion, the living legend that is Anderson Silva finally fell on Saturday night, losing his crown in stunning fashion to challenger Chris Weidman.

The Spider, known to mock his opponents from time to time inside the Octagon, taunted the All-American a little too much during their main event bout at UFC 162, eventually eating one too many punches to the face while his hands were down.

As the MMA world witnessed Silva's helpless body fall to the canvas, a new king had already taken his spot atop the throne of the middleweight division.

While Weidman was slaying legends, teammate and former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar was starting his own ascent back to another title shot, easily taking the unanimous decision over Charles Oliveira in the night's co-main event.

Hit the jump to check out what could be in store for Weidman, Edgar and the rest of Saturday night's main card winners.

Cub Swanson

Kicking off the night's main card with a bang, surging featherweight contender Cub Swanson made it five wins in a row on Saturday night, taking out Dennis Siver with a barrage of punches for the third round finish.

The Fight of the Night winning performance further proved how dangerous of an opponent Swanson is, with last night's win earning him his fourth knockout finish in five fights.

While the line of contenders is a bit backed up right now in the featherweight division, the Greg Jackson product should be near the top of the list for who gets the next shot at the 145 lb. belt.

Since champ Jose Aldo is taking on Chan Sung-Jung next month (and it's anybody's guess as to how Anthony Pettis fits into the UFC's plans for the featherweight division), Swanson will probably need one more win before he gets a crack at a title.

A rematch with No. 2 ranked Ricardo Lamas would be the perfect bout to determine the next top contender.

Mark Munoz

After an extended layoff from the Octagon, middleweight Mark Munoz showed no signs of ring rust in his dominant performance over Tim Boetsch.

"The Filipino Wrecking Machine" cruised over Boetsch, controlling "The Barbarian" with his superior wrestling and crisper striking combinations to take the unanimous decision.

While Munoz finds himself back in the win column, he will need to take out another top 10 middleweight if he wants to get back on track to a title shot.

However, since his last loss is a relatively recent one to Weidman, that shot may be further down the line.

As the UFC sorts out the next top contender at 185, Munoz would be wise to take on a skilled, but unranked opponent in order to maintain his status in the division.

I think the perfect next fighter for him to take on would be another winner from Saturday night: Tim Kennedy.

The Strikeforce veteran was impressive in his UFC debut, and it would make for a great battle of heavy hitters should he face Munoz next.

Tim Kennedy

Taking on a member of the famed Gracie family, Strikeforce vet Tim Kennedy kept his cool against Roger Gracie, outwrestling and outworking the jiu-jitsu standout to take the unanimous decision victory.

Kennedy showed no signs of Octagon jitters in his UFC debut and was able to stay calm in order to work out of any bad positions Gracie put him in.

While the win wasn't the most impressive of Kennedy's career, it was a solid enough victory to put him on the map in the middleweight division.

As long as he doesn't get into anymore trouble with his mouth, Kennedy should get an opponent from the lower half of the division's top 10 for his next fight.

Like I said in the previous slide, a matchup with Munoz, ranked No. 8 in the division, would make for an exciting fight.

Frankie Edgar

4 of 5

It was a vintage Frankie Edgar performance on Saturday night as the former lightweight champ manhandled Charles Oliveira for the decision victory.

"The Answer" took the young Brazilian down while outstriking Oliveira with his crisper punching combinations standing up.

Edgar looked really good last night and showed that his skills are leaps and bounds better than "Do Bronx's," so he should probably get a top 10 featherweight for his next fight.

Since "The Answer" just recently fought champ Jose Aldo, he's probably a few wins away from another shot at the belt.

A victory against the winner of Chad Mendes vs. Clay Guida could, however, get him very close to that coveted next title shot.

Chris Weidman

5 of 5

Weidman pulled off what many thought was impossible on Saturday night, finishing Anderson Silva in brutal fashion, the likes we've never seen before.

Now the UFC's latest middleweight champion, the New York native must cement his status as the top dog at 185 by defending his new belt.

The question is: Who will that challenger be?

UFC President Dana White is adamant that a rematch with Silva will be next for the new champ, and Weidman appears to be open to it. However, judging by his post-fight interview, The Spider didn't seem too eager for another fight with Weidman.

Personally, I think you have to give Silva a rematch due to his status as one of the greatest of all time, sort of like the situation that occurred after Edgar took out BJ Penn for the first time.

Next Fight: Anderson Silva (if he's up to it)
