Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Reds Should Step Up Wilfried Bony Pursuit

Tim DanielsJun 8, 2018

As Liverpool wait for Luis Suarez to make a final decision about his future, the club should be actively pursuing attacking depth. Wilfried Bony has emerged as a potential target, and the Reds would be wise to make a serious push to sign the Vitesse striker.

Swansea have been leading the chase and recently improved their bid, but Everton, West Ham and Liverpool are also interested, reports Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror. Vitesse are waiting on a bigger offer for one of their key assets.

"

The Swans, boosting their squad for a Europa League campaign after winning last season's Capital One Cup, have already had an offer of around ยฃ10m rejected.

Vitesse are holding out as Liverpool, Everton and West Ham have all expressed interest in the Ivory Coast international.

The Suarez situation remains fluid with just over a month until the next campaign begins. Liverpool are hoping for a resolution to the saga by month's end, but an exact timetable remains unclear, leaving the club in a tough position.

That's why manager Brendan Rodgers should make a serious push to land Bony. The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international scored 31 goals in 30 appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, an impressive goal-scoring rate regardless of the league.

Moving to the Premier League would represent an increased level of competition and likely a transition period, but Bony possesses the finishing ability necessary to succeed over the long haul.

As of now, there would be plenty of question marks surrounding the Liverpool attack if Suarez were to exit Anfield. Daniel Sturridge would probably assume the lead striker spot after showcasing strong form late last season.

The Reds would probably need to use more of a committee approach to fill the void, though. No single player on the roster is capable of providing the type of production Suarez has for the Reds.

Adding Bony to a group that also includes Iago Aspas, Fabio Borini and Daniel Pacheco would give Rodgers plenty of options behind Sturridge. Once he settled in, it wouldn't be a surprise for Bony to emerge as a significant contributor.

That said, Liverpool can't waste any more time if they are serious about landing him. With three other clubs involved, a bidding war could easily develop and drive his price too high. The Reds would be best served acting quickly with one solid offer.

Rodgers has done a nice job since taking over the Reds before last season. This Suarez situation is his tougher test to date, though. When the dust settles, his attack must be prepared to make a push up the table with or without Suarez.

Bony would help him reach that goal.
