Tottenham Transfer News: Breaking Down How Paulinho Would Impact Spurs

Rob GoldbergJun 30, 2013

Tottenham will need to have a strong offseason of moves if the club will contend in the English Premier League next season. Fortunately, it received some good news from a potential target.

Brazilian player Paulinho said that he had been told Gareth Bale will be staying with Tottenham heading into next season. Additionally, the forward appeared likely to join the club as well. According to Hannah Duncan of Metro, he said:

"

To play in England for a great team like Tottenham is a dream. What I respect about Tottenham is the ambition they have shown.

It is important for the team and for the Brazilian fans that at the moment all my focus is on winning the Confederations Cup. But after the tournament is finished, I hope it is a deal that can get finalised quickly.

The 24-year-old player had previously indicated his interest in the club by saying, per Darren Lewis of Mirror Football: "I couldn’t turn them down if they made me an offer. It would be a fantastic opportunity to play for Tottenham."

Considering that Greg Stobart of Goal.com reported that the club is set to bid £14 million and is willing to go up to £17 million for the star, this move is certainly close to being finished.

If a transfer is eventually completed, it would make a huge impact on the entire English Premier League.

Paulinho is one of the better young forwards in the sport, displaying great consistency as a scorer the past few years with the Corinthians. He had eight goals last season in Brasileirao and usually took advantage of his limited opportunities up front.

His coach, Tite, had very high praise when discussing the young player, per Globoesporte (via Sambafoot):

"At the moment, Paulinho is the best player in Brazil, even ahead of Neymar. Paulinho has been the better performer of the two this year."

Regardless of your opinion on that statement, there is no denying that he has been a big part of Brazil's success at the Confederations Cup. He scored two goals in the squad's opening four matches, including the game-winner in the 86th minute of the semifinals against Uruguay.

Here is a look at his impressive score in the squad's first match against Japan:

This helped him earn the seal of approval from teammate David Luiz, who said of Paulinho, via Darren Lewis of the Mirror: "He's a fantastic player both defending and attacking. He is complete, he'll do well in England. It's a great moment for him."

If the forward joins Tottenham, he will provide Bale with some help up front, something that was desperately missing the past season. Too often did the Spurs rely on the young player to make things happen, but Paulinho has the ability to create big moments on his own.

It will also make the offense much tougher to defend with multiple players capable of scoring at any moment. If the young squad improves as expected, it could have one of the top offenses in the English Premier League.

The youth is another important factor to consider in this transfer. At 23 years old, Bale is already one of the top midfielders in the sport and will only get better. The club must do a good job of surrounding him with talent that will grow alongside of him.

This will not only help make the team a dominant force in a few years, but it will also prevent the young player from wanting to leave town.

Tottenham finished in fifth place in the EPL last season, narrowly missing a chance to qualify for the Champions League. However, adding an offensive force like Paulinho can help get the club into a top-four spot next season.

If everything goes well, the squad should be able to be a legitimate league contender within a few years.
