Andy Murray Defeats Tommy Robredo in 3rd Round of Wimbledon 2013

Jeremy FuchsJun 8, 2018

Andy Murray defeated Tommy Robredo in the third round of Wimbledon 2013 by a score of 6-2, 6-4, 7-5.

The hometown star handled Robredo relatively easily, taking the first set in 35 minutes. The BBC Sport Twitter feed provided some of the gaudy stats:

Robredo did fight back a bit in the second set, but he was unable to overcome Murray winning 100 percent of points on his first serve in the set.

As noted by the ESPN Tennis Twitter feed, Murray is virtual lock to win matches when he's up two sets to none:

Robredo showed some life in the third set, when he went up five games to four and started to play more aggressively. His serve became more effective and he started to hit a few more winners; it looked like he had a chance to take the set.

But Murray won the last three games of the set to close out the match.

Despite Robredo's success in the third set, Murray dominated this match, wasting little energy in beating the 32nd-ranked Spaniard in two hours and two minutes. Murray was never really challenged, hit all the shots he needed to and was excellent off the serve. Robredo looked a bit overmatched.

Murray looked at home on the grass, moving effortlessly and forcing Robredo into bad shots. Murray, who had 40 winners, said after the match that he struck the ball well, per the Wimbledon Twitter feed:

Murray's serves were on point all match, averaging close to 130 MPH, and he had nine aces. Robredo did not have a consistent response to Murray's serve.

Murray also played a clean game, with just 14 unforced errors.

Murray will face the winner of the match between Viktor Troicki and Mikhail Youzhny. With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal already eliminated, Murray and Novak Djokovic seem like they are on a crash course to face off in the final.
