Mayweather vs. Alvarez: Marquee Fight Will Live Up to Hype
There are still two months until Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, but the fight will be worth the wait when it finally arrives.
Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reported on Thursday that the match sold out in less than a day, so there are high expectations for the September 14 meeting.
When the two boxers meet, it will be interesting to see if Alvarez can make it a challenge for Money.
Mayweather is a perfect 44-0-0. Nobody has been able to put a dent in his record, and many wonder if there is anyone who can even manage a draw.
On the other side, Alvarez is 42-0-1. Of those 42 victories, he has 30 knockouts. His record suggests that he should be able to stay with Money, and all indications are that he will be able to do exactly that.
Nobody should doubt whether or not Mayweather can come out on top. He has earned the right to be called the best boxer in the world, although Alvarez has the ability to make it tough on Money. Mayweather hasn't shown any signs of slowing down lately. He makes his punches count rather than unleashing a flurry on his opponent.
A big edge he holds over Alvarez is his ability to be on the defense. Money wears his opponents down. He has only one knockout in the last six years mainly because he is on the defensive a lot. Combine his stellar defense with his quickness, he has given his opponents problems with his versatility.
Alvarez has won every match for over seven years, and he has also never been defeated. He continues to be steady and has shown the ability to win matches against tough competition.
The key to this match will be Alvarez's ability to constantly attack Mayweather. Although Money is good at defending attacks, Alvarez can't get discouraged if he's not able to wear Money down. A consistent attack needs to be Alvarez's plan.
Alvarez should also try to use power to his advantage. Taking down a champion is no easy task, so using a powerful approach will be a big factor.
This junior middleweight bout will feature a contrast in styles. Money will be on the defense and take his shots when necessary, and Alvarez will try to upset Mayweather by coming after him punch after punch.
Each boxer will be looking to remain unbeaten. Nobody has been able to find a way to beat either guy, which will make this bout intriguing.
A knockout isn't likely by either side, so look for a long match. As it goes on, this bout will show why everyone had such high expectations.
