Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013 Results: Updated Scores and Group Standings

Tim DanielsJun 28, 2013

The 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens is the sixth edition of the tournament, which started in 1993 and has taken place every four years. Fiji is the only multiple time winner of the showcase event and returns seeking a third title.

Other top contenders chasing the title include New Zealand, the 2001 champion and 2005 runner-up, South Africa, Samoa and England. A couple of dark horses could also make some noise, including Wales and Argentina.

The fast-paced style of play makes the Sevens format attractive, which probably helped the sport gain recognition from the international sports community. So much, in fact, that it was added to the Olympic program for 2016.

While that's great news for the sport as a whole and the players who will get to enjoy the spotlight three summers from now, it will force changes to the World Cup. The next one won't take place until 2018, when it will become the two-year alternative to the Olympics.

The increased status of Rugby Sevens also adds more pressure to this year's tournaments. Every country involved has its sights set on a strong showing to make a statement before the focus shifts towards Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

It all starts with the group stage. A total of six groups features four teams each. The stage will take on a round-robin format with each team playing three matches. The results will then determine where each side ends up for the knockout rounds.

Knowing that, let's check out the latest scores and group standings. All scoring information is courtesy of the tournament's official site.
