Kris Srikanth: What Cricket Commentators Shouldn't Be

Rohini IyerMay 6, 2009

This article is the first of a series about what cricket commentators shouldn't exactly do and resemble (not physically) while on the job.

Considering the fact that the recent ones joining the commentating bandwagon are almost clueless on the sport, at least for the time being there should not be any dry patch on these so-called stalwarts!

Thus, getting the maiden come-uppance while we are on the subject is Mr. Krishnamachari Srikanth, who in my opinion bears a distinction of being one of India's finest-opening batsmen in his hey days, while being absolutely "PITS" as a commentator post retirement.

But there is a glitch—he isn't one of those idiots giggling out there without any thorough understanding of the subject matter. His problem is that he knows way way too much and irks us all with his intellectual sermons!

Add to that his self-obsessive-compulsive disorder! As a fan listening to the commentary, one will always know when Srikanth has popped inside the chamber; of course his accent is so very pronounced, but when it is compared to the egotistical tales of his greatness, the accent is hugely bearable!

On and on he goes talking about "This particular stroke reminds me when I played a similar shot against some bowler in some year....and... blah..blah...blah...."

There won't be a single detail of the current match, except a verbal compare and contrast about what he did as an active player and what the current player could have done right. it's more like a show of some "Kris Klassics" where he must have pioneered a glorious Indian victory.

"Hello...Hello....Ahem...Ahem." No, this is not me. This is the other commentator shouting from inside his head hoping that Kris knows mind reading and stops blowing his own trumpet! The conversation between the duo is starved, save for the monosyllables Kris allows the other guy in his full-blown generosity.

And by the time the other commentator manages to wrangle and squeeze in some words, it's time for the next pair of commentators to continue the discussion and debate on the match. It's a really woebegone time for the man!

And considering this, I am prepared to bet that whoever is paired with Kris for the day will not go home an happy man.  He will hate Kris for ruining a good live show with his unrequired memories as a player, when almost all the fans of his time are accustomed to the new guys than his personal records and statistics.

So the ultimate question is this: Who in the cricketing world is satisfied with his commentating prowess? If such a person does exists in the real world, please could that person explain me what is the silver lining that I fail to perceive in his words, which has seemingly eluded me so far?
