Players To Watch on Draft Day
Seth Jones, D, Portland, WHL
While the Colorado Avalanche have teased that the franchise will not take Portland defenseman Seth Jones No. 1 overall—new head coach Patrick Roy told Craig Custance of ESPN that the team is leaning toward forward Nathan MacKinnon—there is little doubt that Jones is the top prospect in the 2013 draft class.
Jones is a tall defender (6’4”) that has plenty of room to grow physically, but it’s the elite abilities he already possesses that would provide teams with so much upside.
As one of the best skating defensemen in the draft, the possibility that Jones could blossom into an elite offensive and stay-at-home defender over his career makes him the brightest prospect on the board.
If Colorado passes on Jones, the Florida Panthers will be the most thankful team in the NHL.
Nathan MacKinnon, C, Halifax, QMJHL
The Avalanche have already expressed their intent to take Halifax center Nathan MacKinnon No. 1 overall. While some will question the decision to pass on Seth Jones, MacKinnon is clearly the best forward on the board and is just as worthy of the No. 1 pick to a team in search of scoring depth.
With intense pressure now put on the shoulders of the talented prospect, MacKinnon will have to rise to the occasion and blossom into a bona fide star. As much as that scrutiny would rattle other players, the Halifax star knows has the mental and physical ability to translate to the NHL.
This all could be a ploy by Colorado to get a team to bite on trading for the No. 1 pick, and if this is a ruse and the Avalanche do take Jones No. 1, the Panthers will have the best forward in the draft.
It’s a win-win for both Colorado and Florida.
