Breakers To Induct Maren Meinert to "Pillar of Excellence"

The Boston Breakers organization is pleased to announce that they will be honoring former Breakers star Maren Meinert as the first inductee to the "Pillars of Excellence" on Sunday, May 17 during a special halftime ceremony at the Breakers-Freedom match (6:00 pm EST, kick off).
 
Maren, a midfielder/forward who started with the WUSA Breakers all three seasons from 2001-03, ended her soccer career on a series of high notes.

In 2003, she was named the WUSA Most Valuable Player after leading Boston to the league’s best record during the regular season. She was also named the MVP of the WUSA All-Star Game that year.

After retiring from club soccer, she achieved one final accomplishment—leading her native Germany to its first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup title in October 2003.

Maren was second in the tournament in goals scored with five, including goals in the semifinals and final against the United States and Sweden, respectively.

To this day, Maren is still involved in the sport as head coach of Germany’s Under 20 Women’s National Team. She even coached against current Breakers coach, Tony DiCicco this past fall at the FIFA Under 20 Women's World Cup in Chile.

It is no doubt that Maren was a special player who dazzled Breakers fans with her playmaking ability and creativity on the ball throughout her time in Boston. 

She was adored and admired by thousands of fans, her teammates, and staff alike.
