Can WPS Get Bill Simmons to Go to an Upcoming Match?

Todd CivinMay 5, 2009

Bill Simmons, the Sports Guy from ESPN.com and author of Now I Can Die in Peace, said skeptically on his weekly podcast last Friday that he is considering going to this weekend’s Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) game between the Los Angeles Sol and Boston Breakers.

“My daughter is a good athlete and runs around. She’s almost four. I could see her dragging me [to a game],” said Simmons, who has a popular cult following for his Page 2 column and The BS Report podcast.

“Here’s your chance…you can go next week. There’s a game in Los Angeles,” retorted ESPN.com soccer writer Jacqueline Purdy. “It’s a home series…Kelly Smith and Marta are like Kobe vs. LeBron, Crosby vs. Ovechkin, Tiger vs. Phil, the two best players at the top of their game.”

“I think it’s too early. It’s been a lot to process. Now you have me going to games. This has been a pretty big step. This whole conversation [about women’s soccer]…a full 10 minutes.”

Other comments or questions voiced by Bill Simmons

“People don’t like paying for men’s soccer—and no one has established that soccer can be a spectator sport in this country.”

“Are there women in this league that men might find attractive?”

“Does it bother you that the women’s sports that have worked in this country have crossed over into sex appeal…like tennis?”
