Wimbledon 2013 Draw: Stars Looking at the Toughest Road to the Finals

Joseph ZuckerJun 8, 2018

What were the officials at Wimbledon thinking? The draw for the 2013 tournament has been unveiled, and it's a bit divisive.

How in the world could Rafael Nadal be seeded fifth? He's coming off a win at the French Open and has looked downright dominant in 2013.

That's just the first of a few questionable decisions the draw has presented. You can view the full draw on Wimbledon's official website.

Plenty of top stars are looking at tough roads to the final. If they get there, they will have definitely earned it.

Here are four high seeds who will have a hard time making a deep run.

Roger Federer

The biggest news surrounding the men's singles draw was that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were drawn so that they could meet in the quarterfinal. The Classical's Fredorrarci put it best.

Federer might be the higher seed, but he'd have to be considered the underdog in any potential match with Nadal. The 27-year-old Spaniard has won 11 of the last 15 meetings between the two, including the last one to come at Wimbledon in 2008.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion is clearly on the decline. Federer did well at the French Open but was bounced in the quarterfinal in straight sets by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Nadal, on the other hand, is coming off of his eighth French Open crown and is playing fantastic tennis. It's ridiculous that he was seeded fifth.

Regardless, he was, and that's the situation Federer must handle. If he makes it to the quarterfinal, he better hope Nadal got upset. Otherwise, it's going to be the Spaniard getting the advantage again.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Speaking of Tsonga, he wasn't given a ton of help, either.

He gets to avoid either Nadal or Federer in the quarterfinal, so that's not all that bad. Tsonga could have to face Andy Murray, which could be tough with Murray playing in front of a raucous home crowd. Murray has also won his last seven matches against Tsonga, with two coming at Wimbledon.

Of course, Tsonga may not even get that far.

In all likelihood, he's got a second-round matchup with Ernests Gulbis. That's going to be a very tricky match so early in the tournament. Sure, he's just the No. 6 seed, but you'd think the tournament officials could have taken it a little easier on Tsonga.

Victoria Azarenka is able to avoid Serena Williams until the final. That's the good news. The bad news is that Azarenka could face Jelena Jankovic and Petra Kvitova by the time she reaches the quarterfinal.

Jankovic has virtually no chance of winning the title, but she could derail Azarenka in the fourth round. She does have the talent to put a deep run together. Jankovic didn't look bad when she made it to the quarterfinal at Roland Garros.

Luckily, the No. 2 seed is 4-3 against Jankovic all time, having won the last three.

If Azarenka is able to make it to the quarterfinal, she could be taking on Kvitova. The past results are not quite as kind. Kvitova has won her last four matches against Azarenka, which includes wins at Wimbledon in 2010 and 2011.

Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki has never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon. She'll need some luck if 2013 will become the first time.

She could have a date with Sloane Stephens in the fourth round. Stephens had a coming-out party at the Australian Open and did well at Roland Garros. She's on a good run right now and would be a very tough opponent.

In the fourth round, Wozniacki could meet Sara Errani. Errani hasn't had a ton of success at Wimbledon either, but she'll prove a tough matchup for Wozniacki.

Should Wozniacki get to the quarterfinal, she could be facing off against Maria Sharapova, whom she has only beaten twice in nine matches.
