Manchester United Transfer News: Marco van Ginkel Would Reinforce Midfield

Matt FitzgeraldJun 7, 2018

Manchester United has reportedly ramped up their efforts to acquire 20-year-old Dutch prodigy Marco van Ginkel, who would bring Old Trafford a marquee building block for the near future and refortify manager David Moyes' midfield.

With such ample finances at his disposal, it would be surprising to see Moyes not be able to to outbid the other English Premier League clubs captivated by van Ginkel in Chelsea and Norwich City.

According to John Drayton of The Daily Mail, United's chief scout Jim Lawlor attended the Under 21 Championship in Israel to watch van Ginkel, who stood out on his native Holland club. The bidding is also expected to begin at £15 million.

There is plenty of upside for van Ginkel, who plays for Vitesse Arnhem and notched eight goals and 10 assists in 33 matches last season, to immediately make a splash, which should be a major part of the pitch the Red Devils make to him.

The retirement of legendary midfielder Paul Scholes, who contributed to United's EPL trophy this season—the 11th since he started his career with the club in 1993—creates an opening for van Ginkel to shine from the beginning.

Additionally, Darren Fletcher has been dealing with a chronic ulcerative colitis condition, which required surgery, will cause him to miss a good chunk of the season and plagued him in the prior campaign.

There's still a chance that he'll be back, as he aims for a return in preseason training, but whether Fletcher will be the same standout player he was is another matter.

Other than the versatile 31-year-old Michael Carrick, there isn't much depth on the line for Moyes to have the characteristically stout defense he's been used to with Everton.

Thus, signing van Ginkel makes a lot of sense. Although van Ginkel will likely have to yield to Carrick for the central midfielder position, the combination of the pair's attacking ability and stout defense gives Moyes tactical latitude to keep opponents off balance.

The transition from offense to defense could happen at any moment with the likes of Carrick and van Ginkel teaming together, as van Ginkel could thrive in the attacking midfielder role and is an outstanding passer too.

This is obviously a new era for the organization, and the owning Glazer family has given Moyes an allowance of £60 million to spend on prospective transfer targets, per The Telegraph's Mark Ogden.

Thus, the front office clearly has faith in Moyes as he fills the gigantic shoes of Sir Alex Ferguson. With this being a fresh chapter for United, Moyes to landing van Ginkel would be a wise strategy in terms of tactics.

Moyes likes to deploy players with van Ginkel's skill set, and the precocious midfielder also has plenty of room to fill out his frame in the coming years and become more physically imposing.

Van Ginkel is versatile in that he can play stout defense but can also fly up the pitch on to the attack, which helped him garner Dutch Talent of the Year honors as the best player under 21.

The opportunity to contribute right away, play alongside the likes of Robin van Persie and the plethora of stars United boasts on their roster, and be a part of the long-term future for one of world football's powerhouses has to intrigue the Dutchman to make the move to Old Trafford.

Moyes has plenty of cash to make the acquisition, and to do so would eliminate at least some uncertainty at United's thinnest position.
