US Open Golf Scores 2013: Real-Time Results and Storylines to Watch on Day 4
The finish at the 2013 U.S. Open will be exciting. Phil Mickelson leads three men by just one stroke and three more are just two strokes behind Mickelson. No one has run away with the lead and that trend is likely to continue on Sunday.
Here's a look at the real-time leaderboard:
There will be a few storylines to follow on Sunday, but none bigger than Mickelson's quest for his first U.S. Open title.
Can Phil Finish?
Mickelson’s room for error is almost nonexistent. Merion Golf Course has proved to be a difficult course, and the chances that he and other contenders could stumble are very real. As has been the case through three rounds of play, the player who can salvage the most pars and sprinkle in the occasional birdie will have the best day.
Lefty hasn’t always been looked at as a clutch performer, but he’ll need to be just that on Sunday if he hopes to hold on to his lead.
Who Will Emerge as Mickelson's Stiffest Challenger?
Of the six players within two shots of the lead, it is almost impossible to predict who will step up as Mickelson’s biggest threat. If you look at the players within striking distance, Hunter Mahan has played the best in the last two rounds.
He’s produced back-to-back 69s to put himself just one shot behind Mickelson. He’s the only player in the field with two rounds under par during the tournament. He would be the most logical choice, but then again, not much has been logical about the 2013 U.S. Open,
Will Anyone Break 67?
It may be hard to believe, but through three days of play, no player has produced a round with a score lower than 67. Mickelson seized the early lead with a 67 on Thursday. Billy Horschel took a share of the lead after he shot three-under par on Friday and Rickie Fowler moved up 28 spots on the leaderboard with a 67 on Saturday.
If someone within five strokes breaks 67 on Sunday, they may very well produce the pressure that makes Mickelson buckle.
