US Open Golf 2013: Jason Day and Biggest Threats to Leaders on Day 4

Brian MaziqueJun 8, 2018

Jason Day is just three shots behind the leaders at the U.S. Open to begin play in the final round. His two-under 68 on Saturday has put him in position to make some noise on the final day. He's just three shots behind Phil Mickelson; check out the real-time leaderboard.

Merion Golf Course has been unkind to most through three rounds, but Day looked awfully comfortable in the third round. He's been so close to landing the big win all year, but he's come up just short. He has four top-10 finishes, including a third-place performance at the Masters.

If he can put up another day in the 60s, Day could finally capture the win that defines his year.

Who Else is Lurking?

Rickie Fowler

Contending on the final day may be a bit of a long shot for Fowler because he’s four shots off the lead, but his three-under 67 from Saturday proves he’s capable of making up major ground.

Fowler jumped 28 spots on the leaderboard with his performance, and another day in the 60s could make things interesting. It isn’t crazy to think that the winner of this tournament could finish at even par overall.

If that were to happen—and Fowler has another stellar day—he’ll be in the mix on Sunday.

Michael Kim

Kim is just an amateur, but he certainly isn't playing like one. Through three rounds, he's five shots back of the leader. Sure, it would be an amazing story for Kim to even crack the top five by day's end on Sunday, but his play has been fairly consistent through three rounds.

He hasn't had a truly great day, but his worst day was the three-over 73 on Thursday.

Is it completely implausible to think that he could actually shoot a round in the 60s on the final day? He'd obviously need those ahead of him to slip up, but Merion has been so challenging this year, there could be enough errors ahead of him to at least make things interesting.
