ICC Champions Trophy 2013: Pakistan vs. South Africa Score, Points Table, More
South Africa kept its undefeated streak against Pakistan alive on Monday, as the Proteas destroyed their opponent by 67 runs in a crucial ICC Champions Trophy matchup.
ICC Live Scores immediately reported that South Africa had won Match 5:
Hashim Amla earned Man of the Match honors for generating 81 runs and was the top-scorer in the contest, according to the ICCโs Twitter account.
The ICC noted on their official Twitter feed that Ryan McLaren was a key piece for the South African victors, taking 4-19 from his eight overs to lead the Proteas victory.
Even without Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel in the lineup at Edgbaston, the SA bowlers were able to do their damage against a weak group of batters.
Match 5 was a rather one-sided affair, with Misbah-ul-Haq representing the only Pakistani batter to provide much of a challenge to South Africaโs bowlers. However, his nation fell behind quickly and struggled mightily after losing the early wickets.
As per the ICC, Misbah said his squad must remain positive in light of the disheartening defeat:
Going into this showdown, both sides knew this was a must-win situation with dire consequences.
Each team suffered a loss in their opening game, setting up a anxiety-ridden matchup at Edgbaston on Monday.
However, South Africa proved to be more resilient, pushing Pakistan to the brink of an early exit. The Proteas have never been defeated by Pakistan in a bilateral ODI series or in World Cup or Champions Trophy play.
Pakistan now needs the West Indies to defeat India on Tuesday if they are to remain in this tournament, while South Africa is back on track after dropping a Group B showdown with the Men in Blue last week.
