Should the Orlando Magic Trade the No. 2 Overall Pick?

Eric GuyJun 7, 2018

The Orlando Magic are pondering the idea of trading the No. 2 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, according to Brian K. Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel (via Kurt Helin of NBC Sports' Pro Basketball Talk).

While some fans may hang their heads in disbelief, do not fret, for such a move may be vastly beneficial for Orlando if it happens.

No doubt, it is easy to become enamored with the idea of selecting Victor Oladipo or Ben McLemore with the No. 2 pick, because both players are immensely talented.

Although the 2013 draft class lacks an abundance of players who have “future star” written all over them, the draft is still full of prospects who can step in and contribute immediately.

Even if the Magic were to trade out of the first 15 picks, quality guards like Jamaal Franklin, Tim Hardaway Jr. and even Shane Larkin would be resourceful options for the team to consider.

Trading the second overall pick to a team in love with one of the top prospects would allow the Magic to receive a number of assets to go along with the budding group they already have.

It is easy to forget how talented Orlando’s youth are.

Arriving as a result of a six-player deal with the Milwaukee BucksTobias Harris proved to be an indispensable piece for the Magic going forward. In 27 games with the Magic last season, Harris averaged 17.3 points and 8.5 rebounds a game, all the while showing that he is a star in the making.

Harris’ lethal mid-range game, smooth moves in the high post and solid rebounding abilities gives the Magic a force at the small forward position that they have not had since Grant Hill donned the royal blue.

Nikola Vucevic is a double-double machine, capable of giving the Magic 20 points and 20 boards on any given night.

With a young core in place to go along with promising head coach Jacque Vaughn, the only thing the Magic strongly lack is veteran leadership. No doubt, the No. 2 pick gives Orlando many options to consider in regards to acquiring a veteran capable of bringing that about.

Based off the previous moves made by the organization, it is clear the Magic know what they are doing.

Whatever course of action they decide to take will be a good one.
