A Few Bright Spots in a Dull Maryland Media

Steve ChottMay 2, 2009

Four years ago, I moved from New York to Maryland. In New York, you have the biggest sports media in the world.

A media sure to make any superstar worry, or reveal anything you are trying to hide.

Good play-by-play analysts calling games, newspaper writers, and great radio personalities.

But then I came to Maryland. And it is nothing near the same thing here. Baltimore has two major sports teams (Orioles and Ravens) along with Washington D.C. having teams (Redskins, Capitals, Nationals, and Capitals).

I can say that the Baltimore/Maryland sports area has a lot of good, passionate fans but the media is less than sub-par.

In this area, the sports media isn't all that great but there are a couple of bright points I would like to touch on.

Michael Wilbon

Most people know him as the black bald guy on ESPN's Pardon The Interruption, but he is also a writer for the Washington Post.

Wilbon mostly covers NBA for the Post but he is for sure a pleasure to read. I love watching Wilbon on PTI and also enjoy reading his writings for the Post.

Gary Thorne

Gary Thorne has been around a lot of cities. He has been a broadcaster in New York with the Mets, New Jersey with the Devils, Chicago with the White Sox, and now where he currently resides in Baltimore with the Orioles.

Thorne also has called baseball on ABC and ESPN, along with NHL on ESPN.

But Thorne has been around awhile and made many memorable calls in his time. He is one of a kind as there are not many broadcasters that can do broadcasting for several different sports.

I am sure that I missed some legitimately good writers in this article but like I said, the Maryland sports media overall is not good.

The two above writer and broadcaster are two bright spots in this dull Maryland sports media.
