Belmont Stakes 2013: Post Time, TV Schedule and More

Patrick ClarkeJun 8, 2018

Horse racing's Triple Crown will come to a dramatic close on Saturday evening at Belmont Park, site of the 2013 Belmont Stakes.

As has been the case every year since 1978, there will be no Triple Crown champion this year after Oxbow spoiled Orb's bid three weeks ago in Baltimore, dominating the nine-horse field at Pimlico to win the second leg in convincing fashion.

But Belmont presents an entirely different challenge. The longest of the three Triple Crown races, the Belmont Stakes is horse racing's ultimate test of stamina.

The Contenders

Orb

The 2013 Kentucky Derby champion, Orb had his Triple Crown bid shot down at the Preakness Stakes three weeks ago after a poor post draw forced him to the inside early, where he never recovered, finishing fourth.

Prior to that effort, the talented colt had won five straight races dating back to November 2012.

Scorching-hot jockey Joel Rosario will ride Orb again on Saturday. Rosario jockeyed Orb at the Derby last month and has sat atop several winners in recent weeks.

With Shug McGaughey's horse starting from a favorable slot in post No. 5 this weekend, look for another strong run from Orb. With 3-1 odds coming in, he's the favorite to conquer the mile-and-a-half distance in Elmont.

Revolutionary

A favorite heading into the Kentucky Derby last month, Revolutionary looked strong at Churchill Downs, finishing third before skipping the Preakness Stakes.

Like Orb, Revolutionary, trained by Todd Pletcher, had built a winning streak prior to the start of the Triple Crown. Revolutionary had won three in a row, including the Grade II Louisiana Derby before showing in the Kentucky Derby.

Revolutionary, who will start from post No. 9 on Saturday, will be ridden by Javier Castellano this weekend. The jockey change is worthy of noting considering the legendary Calvin Borel rode the colt at the Derby in May.

With 9-2 odds to win on Saturday, horse racing fans should keep an eye out for Revolutionary this weekend.

Oxbow

Prior to his memorable win in the Preakness Stakes last month, Oxbow had recorded just two victories in 10 starts.

The D. Wayne Lukas-trained horse was flying under the radar heading to Pimlico Race Course following a sixth-place finish at Churchill Downs, but came out fast at the Triple Crown's shortest track, leading from wire to wire to take the second leg.

And according to Lukas, Oxbow, who has 5-1 odds, is in even a better place than he was last month, per KY Derby Contenders:

Oxbow's impressive display of speed and stamina bodes well for his chances this weekend at the longest of the three Triple Crown tracks. Still, with 13 other horses gunning for the win, Gary Stevens and Oxbow will have their hands full from start to finish.
