2013 MLB Draft Results: Full Listings for Day 2 Selections

The second day of the 2013 MLB draft resulted in hundreds of players breathing sighs of relief after not hearing their names called on Day 1.

When the most highly sought-after prospects are gone is when scouts make their money. There were plenty of sleepers selected in Round 3 to 10, and the best scouts identified them.

Top Storylines from Day 2

Astros Start Day 2 with Kent Emanuel

Desperate for pitching, Houston not only selected right-handed pitcher Mark Appel with the first overall pick, but it picked right-handed pitcher Andrew Thurman in the second round as well. Instead of targeting another position in the third, the Astros just switched it up and added a southpaw.

At 6’4”, 215 pounds, Emanuel possesses an ideal frame, and his fastball reaches speeds of 91 mph.

Jon Denney Finally Selected

Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com ranked Denney the 20th-best prospect in the 2013 draft class. Not only did the high school catcher slip out of the first round, but he was still on the board after the entire first day passed.

The Red Sox grew tired of passing on Denney and selected him in the third round with the 80th overall pick. They didn’t necessarily need a catcher, but he was too talented to pass up at that point in the draft.

Ryan Boldt Still on the Board

Perhaps an even more drastic drop than Denney’s, Mayo’s 39th-best prospect, Ryan Boldt, is still waiting for his phone to ring going into Round 11.

Chris Harrell of the Red Wing Republican Eagle reported that teams avoided Boldt due to the unlikelihood that the Nebraska commit actually signs on the dotted line:

Whether or not that unlikelihood results in Boldt going undrafted will be a major storyline for the remainder of the draft.
