Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Should Avoid Wesley Sneijder Despite Interest

Rob GoldbergJun 8, 2018

There are players that Chelsea should look to acquire this summer to help the club heading into next season, but Wesley Sneijder is not one of them.

Sneijder is coming off a strange season that saw a lot of moving and not a lot of action on the pitch. The midfielder fell out of favor with Inter and only played five matches in Serie A before being sent to Galatasaray in January

He played a few Champions League matches with his new club, but really only had one strong performance in a home battle against Real Madrid. He had a goal and an assist in the contest, though the opponent had built up a big enough lead in the first leg to advance to the next round.

Now, the veteran is looking to make a move to the English Premier League, according to Jamie Sanderson of Metro Sport. Sneijder even said that he talks regularly with new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho:

"

"I have a great relationship with Jose Mourinho. We have kept in contact since our time at Inter Milan—and we talk often. Does Chelsea need a play-maker? I'm not sure. In football you can never be certain what will happen."

"

While it is nice that the 28-year-old player keeps in touch with his former manager, this is not an addition Chelsea needs heading into next season.

The Blues finished second in the EPL with 75 goals scored this season, 11 behind leader Manchester United. Offense was rarely the problem. When it was, it was due to inefficiency up front. The forwards simply could not get the ball in the net.

With Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, the passers are already in place. What the squad needs are forwards who can finish consistently. It is unknown if Demba Ba or Fernando Torres represent the future at that position, but they both struggled in league play this past season.

This makes a new goal-scorer one of the biggest needs of the summer. Mourinho has already set out a wishlist of players that fit this description, including Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, according to Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail

A few years ago, Sneijder would have easily been part of this list. During the 2006-07 season he scored 18 goals for Ajax Amsterdam. Unfortunately, he is simply not that player anymore.

The Dutch had some good years with Inter after struggling with Real Madrid, but he was rarely the focal point of the attack. Although he can provide Chelsea with experience, he does not offer what Chelsea needs anymore.

Chelsea has a good core in place to be one of the top squads in Europe over the next few years. Sneijder simply will not help as much as his pricetag would indicate.
