Norwich City: Top 5 Signings Since Canaries Have Been Promoted to the EPL

James KentJun 8, 2018

Norwich City has made some rather decent signings in the two years that they have been back in the Premier League. And since we are currently in the summer transfer window, it can be good to amuse ourselves with a bit of a look back.

Obviously, Chris Hughton will be looking to add some quality to the squad before preseason begins. Having a look at this list may give him a bit of inspiration and a gentle reminder about finding bargains in the transfer market, considering none of the players on this list cost an awful lot.

Bradley Johnson

1 of 5

Bradley Johnson arrived at Carrow Road ahead of last season on a free transfer from Leeds United. He is a tough tacking midfielder who has been vital and ever present. I will be honest enough to say that when Alex Tettey arrived last summer, I thought that Johnson would struggle to play made games.

However, it’s been another excellent season for the defensive midfielder, and he has played a lot of games alongside Tettey. But it’s fair to say that in the context of the season, Johnson outperformed his Norwegian counterpart.

The player was a real bargain when he arrived, and he has since proved himself to be a stable Premier League performer. I’m sure he will remain a big part of Chris Hughton’s plans next season. He is also a reminder that some great deals can be found on the free transfer market.

Anthony Pilkington

Anthony Pilkington was another player who joined the club ahead of last season for a fee in the region of £2 million from Huddersfield Town. He has proven to be another real bargain and adapted to Premier League football very quickly last season.

This season he performed very well again, and his winning goal against Manchester United after a long passing move was a real highlight of the season.

It’s important to note that Pilkington has proven to be very adept at scoring goals and settling them up during his time here. Players outside of the strikers who can score goals are a hugely useful option to have on any Premier League squad.

Sebastien Bassong

I think we can all agree that Sebastien Bassong was a very important signing when he arrived in the summer ahead of this season. Most of us realized that we captured a real quality defender, and his performances this season have been quite superb. His defensive displays have been a joy to watch, and he has always shown superb leadership qualities.

The biggest compliment I can give him is that every defensive partner alongside him this season has looked pretty solid. And we all know that hasn’t always been the case when they have played without the Cameroon defender.

Robert Snodgrass

4 of 5

Robert Snodgrass was a long-term target of Norwich City, and he finally came on the scene last summer ahead of the new season. He is another player who arrived from Leeds, and he has found a new home in Norfolk. I think he and Bassong have proven to be Norwich City’s most important players this season.

I think we all know the Canaries have not scored as many goals as they would have liked, but Snodgrass has been one of the players who has provided some of those crucial goals.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that the team has scored a lot of goals from set pieces this season, and Snodgrass has played a key role in that by either scoring from direct free kicks or assisting goals from corners and free kicks.

Michael Turner

5 of 5

Michael Turner arrived at the club from Sunderland last summer, and the initial impact he made was largely a negative one. However, it’s fair to say that defender quickly improved and by the end of the season had formed a very solid partnership with Bassong.

If there were an award for most improved player, then it would likely go to Turner. Turner has simply become a very good player and deserves to be recognised as such. Like the other players on this list, he will surely remain a crucial member of the squad next season.
