Recap
Mexico are top of The Hex after a vital win against Jamaica in Kingston.
Aldo De Nigris scored the only goal of a high-energy, albeit sloppy, affair at Independence Park, but Mexico might well have won by two goals had Javier Hernandez not been robbed by Donovan Ricketts late in the second half.
At the other end Jose de Jesus Corona was equally solid between the sticks and has now surely nailed down the number-one spot heading into Friday’s qualifier against Panama.
Diego Reyes also put in a good shift for Mexico, but in truth the guests were little troubled by the Reggae Boyz, who only looked a threat to score once Ryan Johnson had been replaced by Darren Mattocks.
Jamaica, propping up the six-team mini-tournament, will welcome the United States to the capital on Friday in desperate need not only of a win, but of a goal.
Going into the match they’ve found the back of the net just once in their last four competitive outings, and another failure to produce meaningful offense would surely deal a severe blow to their chances of advancing to next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
