The charismatic, colourful and controversial Jose Mourinho has signed a four-year deal to become the new manager of Chelsea, as BBC Sport has confirmed.

The Portuguese coach, who took charge of Real Madrid for the last time on Saturday, is returning to Stamford Bridge for a second spell after leaving the club in September 2007 following a fallout with club owner Roman Abramovich, as BBC Sport reported.

The 50-year-old guided Chelsea to unprecedented success during his three-year tenure between 2004 and 2007, with two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups won during that time.

However, Mourinho missed out on the Champions League in 2005 when Chelsea were beaten by Liverpool at the semifinal stage.

Former Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez was again the architect of Mourinho's downfall in the last four two years later when his Anfield side won through to the Champions League final courtesy of a penalty shootout on Merseyside.

Chelsea supporters adore Mourinho for the success he brought on the field, but his character off it was also welcomed by the media, who loved the charisma and quotes he brought to press conferences.
