Manchester United Transfer Rumours: David Moyes Must Find Way to Salvage Summer

Ryan RudnanskyJun 8, 2018

There's reason to be a bit worried if you're a Manchester United fan.

That is, if you expect United to win the Premier League next season.

Not only is Wayne Rooney possibly on the move, Bayern Munich may win the sweepstakes for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowki, who was reportedly a prime target as Rooney's replacement if the 27-year-old left Old Trafford.

On top of that, landing Gareth Bale is basically a pipe dream. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has said he won't sell another top player to one of Spurs' Premier League rivals after the transfer of Dimitar Berbatov to United for £30 million in 2008, per the Daily Express.

Rooney, who reportedly asked Sir Alex Ferguson for a transfer at the end of last season, is being courted by several clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, according to the Daily Express.

Lewandowski's agent Cezary Kucharski recently told Polish news channel TVN24, via the Daily Express:

"

Yes. Robert will join Bayern this summer.

There is no point in pretending that he will not move to Bayern. Robert wants to leave and that is what will happen.

It is a matter of time. It could be a done deal within a week or within two to three weeks. We are waiting for a signal from the club. We are working on this deal.

"

So, if Rooney leaves and Lewandowski indeed joins Bayern Munich, what's next for United?

That's the dilemma new manager David Moyes faces taking over for none other than the historic Sir Alex Ferguson. To say he has a lot on his plate—especially given the expectations of United coming off an EPL championship—is an understatement.

The reality is, it's hard to believe United wouldn't be competitive next season, even with the departure of Rooney. The club won by 11 points this past season, outscoring No. 2 scorer Chelsea by 11 goals in the process. United will still have one Robin van Persie, who was excellent as usual last season.

That being said, a top-four finish isn't the general expectation, either. The general expectation is another league trophy, as unfair as that may seem for Moyes.

Moyes could conceivably see a historic figure at Old Trafford in Rooney and pack his bags in the manager's first year with the club. Sir Alex Ferguson sure picked a great time to retire, right?
