Epsom Derby 2013: Ruler of the World's Win Removes Some Appeal from St. Leger

Much like Oxbow took away the appeal of the Belmont Stakes in the run for the American Triple Crown, Ruler of the World's Epsom Derby triumph has done the same to Britain's version.

Dawn Approach had taken the 2,000 Guineas and had hoped to win at Epsom Downs en route to a British Triple Crown, but Ruler of the World changed the plans. 

Just as it is in American horse racing, the final leg of the Triple Crown has much more appeal when a horse has the chance to run the table. 

The gap between Triple Crown winners is even bigger in the United Kingdom than it is in the United States. Affirmed was the last horse to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes when he pulled the trick in 1978.

The last horse to win the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and St. Leger to capture British horse racing immortality was Nijinsky in 1970.

With the drought at 43 years and counting, the feat seems more and more special. When a horse threatens or eventually duplicates the gem, it will be even more special.

The impact and buzz would be similar to what American horse racing almost saw in 2012. I'll Have Another won the first two legs of the Triple Crown with amazing closing ability.

Heading into the Belmont—the longest of the three races—it seemed I'll Have Another would have a great chance to break the 34-year American drought.

But before the hype could reach its peak, fans learned the horse would not run in the Belmont.

It was a major downer.

At least Ruler of the World spared British fans who were hoping for a Triple Crown the heartbreak early on. Somehow I don't think that will be much help for the disappointment.
