The Favorite: Dawn Approach at 1-1

This year’s favorite is trying to follow in Camelot’s footsteps and become just the second horse since 1970 to follow up a 2000 Guineas victory with a win at the Epsom Derby.

Bettors certainly believe in him, as Dawn Approach has all the markings of a Triple Crown contender. He’s currently unbeaten over seven starts and crossed the finish line with a five-length lead at Newmarket back in early May.

The daunting length of the Derby should be no problem, as trainer Jom Bolger likely has plans to capture the more distant St. Leger Stakes in September.

Don’t sleep on Dawn Approach heading to Doncaster later this summer with a real shot at capturing the first UK Triple Crown since Nijinsky in 1970.

The Long Shot: Ruler Of The World at 8-1

Never count legendary trainer Aidan O’Brien out of a race, especially when he has five contestants in this event. While Battle of Marengo is his colt with the shortest-odds, Ruler Of The World seems to have the best shot to win.

He’s relatively untested, but the three-year-old managed to win the two races he was entered in: a tight maiden at the Curragh last year and a sixth-length victory at the Chester Vase in May.

While the competition in the Grade 3 race wasn’t anything special, the fact that Ruler Of The World dominated a 1m 4f 66y turf race bodes extremely well for his chances at the Epsom Derby.

No other competitors have the experience that this colt possesses in distance runs, making him a great bet to hit the board on Saturday.

The Bad Bet: Ocean Applause at 500-1

At 500-1, it seems the books are desperate to draw any sort of action on Ocean Applause—by far the weakest horse in the field.

The fact that he’s been tested 16 times and been unsuccessful in each—Ocean Applause’s best results have been three third-place finishes—is certainly something driving bettors away.

Even his trainer, John Ryan, seems unconvinced this colt has any shot of winning the Derby—telling The Mirror:

"

Stranger things have happened - but not very many.

This may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience - he’s my first Derby runner - and victory would be a fairytale. I’m the first to admit this year has not gone to plan but he does have ability.

"

Don’t get duped by the dreams of big payouts, as Ocean Applause has no chance of winning this prestigious Triple Crown event.
