Liverpool's Dead Weight

Varun MadhavanMay 1, 2009

Tom Hicks' and George Gillett's two year reign of Liverpool so far can be described with two words, "Joke" and "Disgrace."

Scousers are popularly mocked by Rival football teams as thieves and knaves. But from where I see it, they stand as the robbed ones.

The two Americans who stepped in with nice suites and sugar filled words guaranteed "Snoop Dogg" for Rafa if need be. Only a few realize that this season's squad is smaller than last season's after the sale of Keane.

If one came to think of it, when Keane was brought in, it was from the money accumulated from the sales of Crouch, Riise and Co. Now that Keane is sold back, all that is left is Liverpool no longer having Crouch, Riise and Co in their squad.

But what hurts them most is the one thing which was the pivotal of their sell out—a new stadium with bigger capacity for the Anfield faithful. The one reason why Moores sold the football club at the first place.

All that has been done with regard to the stadium by these current owners are:

1. Publish a new grand stadium plan with a capacity of 75,000.

2. Reduce the planned capacity to 60,000.

3. Throw the plan into the paper shredder and wipe their hands clean.

A new stadium under their ownership has become so improbable that it is fast becoming a joke.

"Yeah, the chances of you winning the bet is as small as the chances of the Yanks building a new Liverpool stadium."

They have clearly lied and Liverpudlians are still suffering from being conned into believing their words. The feeling is very similar to the one people feel when they have elected an official who got in with promises they never planned to keep.

The root of every problem the club has faced in the past two years begins from the two owners.

Their lack of faith in Rafa Benitez has hit the club's progress one too many times.

Starting from the Klinsmann debacle, who got fired recently thanks to his wonderful management leading to Bayern's UCL berth under threat, to the Barry transfer horror show—the player who has had another wonderful season with Villa this year—they have been nothing but trouble for Liverpool.

Their lack of knowledge of how European football works has hindered their understanding of many situations.

Clearly, they can be easily convinced by tabloids and critics rather than by his manager and their board.

The way one of the owners reacted to Benitez claiming his "fact" speech has led to Liverpool's derailment during the January and February months(when the actual reason was Liverpool's lack of depth and availability of quality replacements when their key duo—Gerrard and Torres—were injured) punctured player's faith in the manager to an extent.

Most of all, the way they treat the whole club shows their true ambitions.

Liverpool FC is a football club with great tradition and respect in the sporting world with a wonderful fan base across the globe.

They have no intentions of making Liverpool a more successful football club. Their only motto with it is to treat it like a cattle: Feed it well enough to fetch a handy profit when they sell it. It seems to be their only ambition off late with them searching for potential buyers.

The duo are hated so much among the Liverpool fans that it spills over to those who were responsible for bringing them in at the first place. David Moores, who has done so much for the club during his reign, sold the club to the Americans ahead of DIC for they offered a paltry amount of 10 million or so more than their competitors.

For this reason, majority of Liverpool fans seethe at the sight of him.

Rick Parry—who failed to do his job by researching well into the background of the owners and their financial strengths, allowing the two owners to take out loans on the club to buy the club—is another culprit who has earned the scorn of supporters.

This string of poor decisions from various members of the club has now led to the two owners of Liverpool FC who are nothing but dead weight to the club.

They have done nothing but lie to the fans and drag back Liverpool instead of stepping forward for the past two years.
