What Would It Take for Sin Cara to Earn a Renewed Push in WWE?

Ryan DilbertJun 3, 2018

Sin Cara's WWE career so far has been a story of disappointment and it will take a making a major connection with the crowd to change that.

The athletic dynamo was a huge success when he wrestled as Mistico in Mexico.

He held several championships in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre including four tag titles and the World Welterweight Championship.  Titles don't tell the whole story, though, as Sin Cara was a huge draw in Mexico. His popularity was so great there that he had his own comic book

How then is he so often dismissed by WWE fans and constantly the subject of derogatory memes?

Being injured so often in his short tenure hasn't helped. In his first year with the company, Sin Cara missed time due to a patella tendon rupture suffered at Survivor Series 2011 and just one year later, as, Wrestling Observer reported (viaCagesideSeats.com), required knee surgery after TLC 2012.

Fans have less issue with waiting around for their favorites to return, but most fans had no connection with him when WWE brought him aboard. Only a sliver of WWE fans likely saw his work in Mexico.

He was starting fresh and his first impressions have been underwhelming.

As fast and as agile as Sin Cara is, WWE should be able to find a way to utilize him. The company can't just force him upon disinterested fans, though, there has to be a point of entry for the audience to enter Sin Cara fandom.

It's often the most random things that gets a wrestler over and it will take a stroke of randomness to help Sin Cara along.

Al Snow's mannequin head and sexual innuendo helped him to his highest level of popularity. More recently, Cody Rhodes' mustache has earned him added attention and even a T-shirt. Tensai has found new life as Sweet T.

For Johnny Curtis, it was the buzz created by his entrance theme that has him receiving far more attention than he ever did in his pre-Fandango career.

It's going to take something like one of those examples to have fans forgetting about his reputation for botching or the fact that he doesn't speak on camera. Should fans latch onto some random craze related to Sin Cara, he'll get bigger, more enthusiastic reactions from the crowd and WWE will take notice.

You can't force fans to get hot for something the way they did for Daniel Bryan's "Yes!" chants; it has to come organically and spring out of nowhere.  Maybe it's a form of crowd interaction that gets the audience excited about him or some silly new element like Mr. Socko. Either way, Sin Cara needs an antidote for the fans' apathy for him.

WWE is going to have try a number of things and see what sticks whether it be a new manager, new music or something completely out of the box.

Once Sin Cara can grab our attention and get people talking about him in a good way, once he gains some momentum, fans can forget about his sputtering beginnings and just watch him do his hypnotizing act in the ring.
