Serena Williams Appears Unbeatable at 2013 French Open
It's hard to imagine anyone defeating Serena Williams at the 2013 French Open.
The woman is playing like her hair is on fire. She's like a bullet train rocketing down the track. It appears her opponents have as much of a chance of stopping her momentum as an unfortunate fly against the windshield of said train.
Here's a stunning illustration that paints a bleak picture for the rest of the field at Roland Garros: Williams' current 26-match winning streak is the third-longest streak since the year 2000, according to the WTA:
Perhaps even more impressively, Williams has only lost three matches since being shocked in Round 1 of the 2012 French Open by Virginie Razzano.
Since Anabel Medina Garrigues took a set from Williams in the quarterfinals at Madrid in early-March, the No. 1 player in the world hasn't come close to losing a set. In her last nine matches, Williams has lost just 26 games—an average of under three games per match.
Who can possibly stop Williams right now?
Maria Sharapova—the No. 2 player in the world and last year's French Open winner—has lost to Williams the last 12 times they faced and has only won two times in 15 chances.
Victoria Azarenka—the No. 3 player in the world—beat Williams in February. It was the last time Williams was defeated, however, and she's won 12 of the 14 matches between the two. Additionally, she devastated Azarenka recently in the women's final at the Rome Masters.
No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska has never beaten Williams in four previous attempts and she stood no chance of victory earlier this year in the semifinals at Miami.
Need I go on?
Barring a miraculous performance, there isn't a single top player in the world right now who can match Williams' intensity, focus and skill. She's at the top of her game. When Williams is at her best nobody can defeat her.
Up next for Williams in Round 3 is Sorana Cirstea, who lost to Williams in their only previous match. Judging from how Williams has swiftly dispatched her first two opponents, Cirstea is doomed to a quick and final exit from the 2013 French Open.
