Manchester United Transfer News: Red Devils Must Land Cesc Fabregas This Summer

Patrick ClarkeJun 7, 2018

Despite a successful run in the English Premier League, champion Manchester United enters the summer facing several tough questions, one of them regarding the current state of the Red Devils' midfield.

With the Sir Alex Ferguson era over and new manager David Moyes set to begin his first season at the helm at Old Trafford, United is in need of a boost at the position, and therefore must go all out to land Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas this summer.

Here's the current situation according to the Mirror's David Anderson:

David Moyes hopes to persuade Cesc Fabregas to reunite with his old Arsenal pal Robin van Persie at Manchester United in a sensational summer transfer.

Fabregas is unsettled at Barcelona, less than two years after re-joining his boyhood club from the Gunners, and is considering a move back to the Premier League.

"

As Anderson mentions, the 26-year-old Spanish midfielder has tons of experience playing with Premier League-leading goalscorer Robin van Persie, going back to their days at Arsenal. Van Persie netted 26 goals for United this past season in league play, overtaking Wayne Rooney as the alpha dog at the top of Ferguson's lineup.

Beyond the connection with van Persie, though, Fabregas is a fantastic midfielder set to enter the prime of his playing career. An exceptional passer, Fabregas utilizes superb vision to set up teammates, but can also score when given the opportunity to make a play in front of the goal.

What's not to love?

There's no denying that Fabregas' presence in the middle would make van Persie even more dangerous on the attack. However, Fabregas would also make the other United players around him better thanks to his ability to control the pace of play.

Plus, with Paul Scholes having retired, Fabregas would fill a vital need in the middle of United's starting XI.

In 31 La Liga appearances for Barca last season, Fabregas scored 10 goals and assisted on 11 others, proving to be one of the most well-rounded midfielders in top-level football.

What's more, the potential addition of Fabregas would be huge for the Red Devils in their pursuit of a UEFA Champions League crown. The club hasn't conquered Europe since 2008, coming up short in 2009 and most recently in 2011.

Clearly, United is potent enough offensively to storm through the Premier League. The question is whether a Moyes-led squad can navigate past the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and other elite European clubs a little less than a year from now.

Fabregas doesn't ensure that, but he certainly boosts United's chances of getting past the quarterfinal stage and potentially returning to the top of the continent in 2013-14.
