French Open 2013 Scores: How Top Players Fared on Day 2 at Roland Garros

Jesse ReedJun 8, 2018

The 2013 French Open is well underway, and Day 2 at Roland Garros featured some of the top names in tennis.

Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Tomas Berdych and Li Na all took to the court on Monday, but not all made it into the next round.

It's rare for top players to lose in the first round, as their high seeds inevitably pit them against young, inexperienced opponents who have yet to show promise or veterans who have never done so on the pro tour.

Here's how these top players fared in the first round.

Rafael Nadal vs. Daniel Brands

Brands 66(4)43

Nadal unsurprisingly won his first-round matchup against Brands, 4-6, 7(7)-6(4), 6-4, 6-3, but his early struggles were unexpected.

Brands has never won a tournament on the ATP Tour. In fact, he's never even gotten to a men's final. He had a 13-10 overall record in 2013 heading into the French Open, but his ability to hit big serves made the match rather interesting for the first couple of sets.

The "King of Clay" was subject to 10 aces by Brands, who almost took two sets before Nadal finally woke up and started imposing his will in the latter half of the match.

Next up for Nadal will be Martin Klizan of Slovakia, who won by way of default when American Michael Russell was forced to retire.

Maria Sharapova vs. Hsieh Su-wei

This match was over in a hurry.

Sharapova only lost three games, beating her opponent in every way possible in a match that only took 54 minutes to complete, according to Break Point:

She was in full command of her serve, hitting four aces, and didn't double-fault once throughout the match. Sharapova also earned a huge advantage on winners, winning 25 and losing just eight.

Sharapova will now face Eugenie Bouchard in Round 2 after Bouchard won in straight sets over Tsvetana Pironkova .

Tomas Berdych vs. Gael Monfils

 Berdych 6(8) 7(7) 7(7)
 Monfils7(10) 6(3) 6(4)

In what was the contest of the day on the men's side and the biggest upset of Round 1, Monfils outlasted Berdych in an epic five-set match that lasted four hours and two minutes.

Even tennis fans who weren't in the stadium were glued to the action by way of the big screens at Roland Garros:

Monfils only made it into the field by way of a wild card and had never before beaten Berdych, per Roland Garros:

The Frenchman scored on a stunning 26 aces and will now move on to the second round to face Ernests Gulbis.

Li Na vs. Anabel Medina

Li NaX66
Medina 34

Li is a former French Open champion (2011), and she had little trouble dispatching long-time veteran on the women's side Medina, who was participating in her 38th consecutive Grand Slam event (h/t the AP, via Tribune.com).

Li had never before beaten Medina on clay in three previous attempts, but she had no trouble breezing through this first-round matchup.

She controlled the action, taking a huge advantage on winners (26-12) and winning 62 percent of her first serves.

Up next for Li in Round 2 is American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who won in straight sets over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
