Airport Travel

Collin CooperApr 29, 2009
The worst part of sports traveling is probably the act of traveling. Some times things can go smoothly and some times it’s pure hell. Most people will make road trips out of their sports destinations, however when time and distance come into play, sometimes you just have to fly.
Cheap flights are now common thanks to lower fuel prices and a shaky economy but nightmares on flights can be plentiful. Be smart about it, you can absolutely hedge your bets by careful planning. If you can get a direct flight, take it. It’s worth at least $200 and eliminates 50% of your headache and 75% of your traveling stress.

If you can’t get a direct flight it’s important to check to see what airport you’ll be changing planes. Some airports are well oiled machines and others modern day cattle facilities.
Your airline carrier is also important. Jet-Blue is great because you can catch other games on your individual TV. Airtran hooks you up with XM radio. Southwest is great for being on-time and cheap fares, but you might have to fly into a secondary airport. Continental’s customer service stands out while Delta, US-Airways, and Northwest all offer nice rewards programs.
Lastly, if you have to worry about finding a spot to cram your carry on in the overhead compartment, just check it.

CHG Least Favorite Airports (avoid like a sick pig from Mexico)

Philadelphia (Always seem to get delayed here and terrible service)

Newark (Very very busy, delays)

Atlanta (Busy, poor food options, expensive)

CHG Less Favorite Airlines (We don’t care and it shows)

USAirways (Just their bag handling policy is enough to annoy anyone)

Delta (Always way over price, don’t even bother checking)

United (Disgruntled flight stewards)

CHG Favorite Airports (Love this place)

Pittsburgh (plenty to do, not very busy, easy to navigate)

Orlando (best at handling large number of passengers)

Las Vegas (Huge, efficient and entertaining…. minus points for long cab lines)

CHG Favorite Airlines (Ahhh, the friendly skies)

Jet-Blue ( Competitive rates, TVs)

Southwest (easy to understand rewards program, efficient, interesting flight attendants)

Continental ( Great customer service)
