UFC 160 saw Cain Velasquez retain his champion in quick, and expected, fashion.
Junior dos Santos defeated Mark Hunt via spectacular knockout to earn another shot at the heavyweight crowd in the co-main event. UFC 160 had 10 more fights for a complete night of action.

UFC Heavyweight Championship: Cain Velasquez vs. Bigfoot Silva
Round 1
Bigfoot out to the center of the Octagon immediately. Velasquez shoots for a single, but Bigfoot gets out. Velasquez's second takedown attempt was stuffed. Leg kick from the champion. Velasquez drops Silva. It's over.
Velasquez defeats Silva by TKO at 1:21 of the first round
As expected. Good shot from the champion, and we'll see the third installment of Velasquez-JDS later this year.
Junior dos Santos vs. Mark Hunt
Round 1
Big leg kick from Hunt. JDS is trying to pop in and out. Hunt has connected on JDS. Again he tags him as he comes in. JDS drops Hunt and is swarming, but Hunt survives. Huge shot from the former champ. Hunt misses on his combination. JDS looking for that overhand right again. Straight right from JDS lands. High tension. Hunt tries a spinning back fist that misses, and JDS answers with a left. Hunt just misses. JDS lands.

Hunt comes in and lands a right. JDS tries the overhand again. Big leg kick from Hunt, and a left hook followed. Good left from Hunt. Hunt with a clean jab, and one from JDS too. Hunt lands a nice right to the body. Stiff jab from JDS. Hunt is allowing him to come in, and it seems like he's baiting him for a big counter. Good jab and spinning back kick from JDS. Hunt lands two right hands against the fence. JDS pumps the jab out. Big exchange against the fence, and Hunt tagged JDS. JDS takes Hunt down, and the crowd boos heavily. JDS is working from half-guard. JDS moves to side control.

Hunt just misses a haymaker. JDS goes to the body, and that has been his set-up for the overhand right. Good jab from the former champion. Slower pace. JDS throwing more. Good jab from Hunt. JDS with a double jab. Right hand touches Hunt's face. Body kick from Hunt. The speed advantage is playing a big part in this round. Left from the former champ rocks Hunt. Wheel kick drops Hunt! JDS follows up and it's over!! WOW!
JDS defeats Hunt by KO at 4:18 of the third round
The speed advantage made all the difference. It kept Hunt on the outside. Hunt made it a fun fight and got his hands on JDS at times, but Cigano is the No. 1 contender without question.
Glover Teixeira vs. James Te Huna
Round 1
Te Huna takes the center of the Octagon. Teixeira working for the takedown, but lets go. They are wasting no time getting to business. Uppercut from Te Huna just misses. Teixeira takes Te Huna down. Teixeira working from guard. Teixeira tries to work to side control, and that gives Te Huna space to get up. Teixeira jumps on a guillotine and finishes.

Gray Maynard vs. TJ Grant
Round 1
Maynard looking to throw bombs right off the get go. Good uppercut from Maynard. Big left hook by the former title challenger. Grant lands a right over the top, and another. Grant drops Maynard. Grant is pouring it on. Shot after shot. It's over.
Grant defeats Maynard by TKO at 2:07 of the first round
Excellent performance from Grant. Once he hurt Maynard he followed up with a slew of precise punches. He was all over Maynard. We will have to see how the fans react to Grant, and his upcoming title shot.
Donald Cerrone vs. K.J. Noons
Round 1
Noons opens up with low leg kicks. Cerrone goes for a takedown, but Noons defends. Cerrone lands a knee on the break. Nice jab from Cerrone. Noons trying to figure out his range. Cerrone just misses on a head kick. Nice low leg kick from Cerrone. Noons comes forward and Cerrone throws a knee. Cerrone takes Noons down, but lets him up quickly afterwards. Nice leg kick from Cerrone. Cerrone is landing much more cleanly. Cerrone throws a good combination that finishes with a head kick. Cerrone looks fantastic through the first five minutes.

Round 2
Cerrone takes Noons down, and nearly takes Noons' back. They separate. Cerrone continues to touch Noons up. Cerrone lands a knee and then the hands come. Noons keeps touching the cut on his face. The blood may be leaking into the eye. Noons comes forward, but nothing lands. Noons lands two left hooks. Spinning back fist lands. Noons comes forward with a knee, but Cerrone times it perfectly and takes him down. Cerrone moves to half-guard. Cerrone doing good work from top position. He is staying active and making Noons work. Cerrone moves to side control before the round ends.

Slow start to the third round. Noons getting frustrated, and Cerrone takes him down. Nice elbows on the mat from Cerrone. Cerrone stays on top as Noons tries to get up. Noons is bloodied up. More elbows from Cerrone. The Cowboy has made this a grimy affair on the mat. Cerrone gets in to half-guard. Cerrone moves to side control as he continues to control this fight. He will ride out the round in side control.

Cerrone defeats Noons by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)
Cerrone looked outstanding tonight. He was simply the better all-around fighter. Noons had virtually nothing to offer Cerrone on this night.
Mike Pyle vs. Rick Story
Round 1
Pyle lands a knee to the body, and Story takes him down. Pyle active from his back. Pyle nearly sweeps Story, and narrowly misses locking in the armbar. Story is simply maintaining position right now. Pyle to his feet, and Story throws a quality combination as they break. Big left from Story. Story drops Pyle with a huge combination, but Pyle is intelligently defending himself so far. Pyle survives. Wow.

Story is still looking for power shots. Knee from Pyle stuns Story briefly. Story pushes Pyle against the fence. Pyle going for a Kimura from bottom. Story with excellent defense. Great stuff on the mat. Story smothering Pyle now, and Pyle is trying to get into a position to sweep. Story is not giving Pyle any space.

Story connects with a left. Pyle lands a knee. Pyle with a good elbow over the top. Story is tiring in this round. A good elbow from Pyle. Story takes Pyle down, but Pyle stands up quickly. Story leaning on Pyle against the cage. They separate. Good knee from Pyle. A right from Pyle. More rights find Story's face. Story gets a takedown. That could have saved him from a 10-8 round, and a draw. Pyle sweeps Story! He can't find a submission to finish.

Pyle defeats Story by split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)
A quality fight with great guard work from Pyle. While a lot of people will bemoan that decision, Pyle was the one attacking in a lot of the ground action. Judges took that in to consideration and awarded him a split decision win.
Dennis Bermudez vs. Max Holloway
Round 1
A touch of the gloves and we are underway. Holloway snaps off a jab right away. Bermudez closes the distance, and Holloway defends with a standing guillotine forcing Bermudez to abandon the attempt. Holloway snaps off another jab. Holloway is keeping Bermudez on the outside with his reach. Holloway moving very well early on. Bermudez shoots in, and Holloway defends with the submission attempt again. Bermudez pressing Holloway against the fence until Holloway gets off the cage. Spinning back kick lands flush on Bermudez. Holloway turning up the pace. Bermudez trying to survive. Bermudez recovering quickly. Spinning back kick to the body. Holloway puts Bermudez down again at the end of the round.

Bermudez goes for a takedown, but Holloway takes his back and sinks in the hooks. Holloway and Bermudez break, and Holloway throws a head kick. Bermudez still coming forward. Nice combination from Holloway. Right hand sneaks through for Holloway. Good leg kick from Bermudez. Bermudez trying for another takedown, but Holloway defends again. Holloway separates and gets back to a striking distance. Another good combination from Holloway. Bermudez finally takes Holloway down.

Good leg kicks from Bermudez. Bermudez takes Holloway down, but Holloway stands back up. Holloway establishing his jab again in this round. Good right slips through by Holloway. Bermudez takes Holloway down, but only for a second before Holloway pops right back up. Holloway tries for a takedown of his own, but it fails. Good right hook by Holloway. Bermudez with a takedown, and is in half-guard. Holloway fights to full guard. Good ground and pound from Bermudez. Bermudez works to half-guard. The horn ends the bout.

Excellent performance from Holloway who has improved his wrestling defense quite a bit. Bermudez was finally able to establish top position in the third, but it was too little too late for him to take the fight -- or so we thought. Holloway landed a variety of strikes, and looked fantastic in a quality fight. Bermudez picks up the poor decision win.
Colton Smith vs. Robert Whittaker
Round 1
Whittaker throws a quick uppercut, but it narrowly misses. Smith circles on the outside. Whittaker throwing fast combinations when he gets the chance. Good jab from Whittaker, but Smith responds with a good right of his own. Whittaker lands another jab. Overhand right from Smith just misses the mark. Smith goes for a takedown, but Whittaker stuffs it. Smith is trying to press Whittaker now, but good defense from Whittaker. Whittaker falls down, and Smith tries to pounce. Smith goes for a Kimura, but Whittaker gets out of it with ease.

Whittaker nails Smith with a left, and Smith is hurt. Smith recovering quickly. Smith lands a right. Good straight right from Smith. Smith goes for another takedown, but he is unable to put Whittaker down. Another right from Smith lands. Smith comes forward, but Whittaker catches him with a left just barely. Left from Whittaker lands. Whittaker rocks Smith with a left. Smith is busted up. Good uppercuts from Whitaker. Whittaker is pouring it on.

Whittaker goes right back to work. Left hook drops Smith, and the referee saves Smith.
Whittaker defeats Smith by TKO at 0:41 of the third round
A striking showcase for Whittaker. He was way too fast with his hands for Smith.
Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Abel Trujillo
Round 1
Tenative start to the round. Trujillo jolts forward to close the distance, but Nurmagomedov backs away without issue. Trujillo takes Nurmagomedov down, but Nurmagomedov goes for an armlock. Trujillo scrambles out of danger. Nurmagomedov gets to his feet, takes Trujillo's back and drags him down. Nurmagomedov sticking to his back and giving Trujillo no space to escape. Trujillo cannot separate. Mario Yamasaki warns Trujillo about grabbing the fence. A scramble, and Trujillo is on top. Nurmagomedov did a lot of excellent grappling, but didn't do any damage. Nurmagomedov gets a triangle! Nurmagomedov rolls to a mounted triangle. Nurmagomedov switching for the armbar, but Trujillo defends and survives the round in the triangle.

Nurmagomedov pressures Trujillo against the fence, and he takes Trujillo's back. Trujillo gets free. Wild exchange between the two, and Nurmagomedov gets behind Trujillo again. Nurmagomedov drags him down. More excellent grappling from Nurmagomedov. Body triangle from Nurmagomedov. Trujillo gets out and back up. Nurmagomedov takes him back down. Trujillo fights up. Trujillo mounts during a takedown attempt, but loses it quickly. Nurmagomedov takes him back down. Nurmagomedov smothers Trujillo to the bell.

Nurmagomedov immediately gets a hold of Trujillo. Nurmagomedov is all over him, and takes him down. Trujillo gets up, and Nurmagomedov puts him back down. Nurmagomedov continually controlling this fight. Trujillo cannot do anything. Trujillo gets back up, and Nurmagomedov takes him right back down. Nurmagomedov does not get a riding time bonus.

Nurmagomedov gave Trujillo no space, and out-grappled him for 15 minutes. Impressive skills, but no damage.
Stephen Thompson vs. Nah-Shon Burrell
Round 1
Thompson opens up with his flashy kicks, but Burrell moves forward on him. Thompson presses Burrell against the fence. Thompson tried to take Burrell down, but that was a poor attempt. They separate. Good kick from Thompson. Burrell lands an uppercut in the exchange. Thompson takes Burrell down. Burrell is back up, but he's against the fence with Thompson pressuring him. Good knees from Thompson. They separate again. Burrell pressing forward, and now he has Thompson against the fence. Thompson reverses position. They separate once again. Solid left hook from Burrell. Another left hook lands. Burrell tries to take down Thompson, but Thompson ends up in mount. Burrell easily gets back up. Thompson has him against the fence again.

Strong kick opening up the round for Thompson. Burrell finds himself backed against the fence once again. They separate, and Thompson digs to the body. Burrell gets in close and lands a couple strikes, but Thompson moves him to the fence before separating again. Thompson moves Burrell back to the fence. Separate again, but Thompson clinches and walks Burrell to the fence. Burrell reverses position, and then Thompson returns the favor. They go back to a striking distance. Burrell trying to close the distance to strike with Thompson, but nothing is happening on that front. Thompson moves Burrell back to the cage. They break. Burrell lands a right, and Thompson responds with a high kick and a right of his own. Low kick from Burrell. Thompson clinches again, and the round closes.

Burrell has a sense of urgency early on, but Thompson stifles that with the clinch. They break. Burrell lands a solid uppercut. Thompson throwing more strikes, but they are weak. Thompson lands a good body kick before moving him back to the fence. Good left from Burrell. Another left hook from Burrell. Thompson firing back. Burrell lands that left hook again. Thompson shoots in with a double, but Burrell quickly gets to his feet. Against the fence they go. And they separate. They are both tired. Flying knee attempt fails, and now Thompson has his back. Burrell lands a couple knees at the end.

This was a dreadful fight, but Thompson controlled the action in the first two frames. That's all there is to be said. It is nice to see Thompson testing out his new skills though.
Brian Bowles vs. George Roop
Round 1
Roop throws a head kick immediately, but it misses. Front kick to the body. Roop lands a knee. Bowles searching for a way inside. Bowles lands a body shot. They mix it up and Bowles rocks Roop with a right. Roop connects with a jab. Roop gets back to maintaining a healthy distance from Bowles. Bowles still trying to use combinations to get inside, but it isn't effective yet. Good leg kick by Roop. Roop throws a quality combination that is mostly blocked by Bowles. Nice body shot from Bowles. Bowles drops Roop, and now he tries to lock in a guillotine. He's out, but Bowles is in mount.

Roop connects with a solid jab. Roop throwing kicks again to keep Bowles away. Big jab on Bowles, and he pounces. Big punches. Herb Dean stops the fight. Big win.
Roop defeats Bowles by TKO at 1:43 of the second round
This was a very big win for Roop. He dropped Bowles with a clean jab, and he finished with precision. This should earn Roop a spot in the 135 top 10. He looks very good back at bantamweight.
Jeremy Stephens vs. Estevan Payan
Round 1
Payan opens with a leg kick, and another. Stephens hits Payan with a low blow and the referee halts the action briefly. Stephens with more leg kicks. Inside leg kick from Stephens. Good body shot by Payan. Stephens takes Payan down. Payan is active from the bottom, but Stephens is landing a couple solid elbows. Upkick from Payan. Payan goes for an armbar, but Stephens spins out. Payan is busted open. Stephens takes Payan back down. Nice punch on the ground, and a knee as Payan gets up by Stephens. Stephens goes back to the leg kicks. Right hand lands from Stephens. Good low leg kick by Payan. Counter right hook lands by Stephens. Another right lands as the round ends.

Stephens clocks him with another strong right hand. Stephens airmails a haymaker left. Stephens takes Payan down. Payan gets back up, but Stephens takes him right back down. Another big elbow lands. Blood is covering Payan's face now. Stephens is controlling him on the mat. Stephens is in side control. Stephens takes Payan's back. Stephens tries a neck crank, but Payan peels his arm off. The submission attempts are making the blood ooze from Payan's head. There is a puddle of o-negative under Payan's head.

Payan is trying to muster some offense, but there is little on his punches at this point. Stephens lands a clean jab. Head kick grazes Payan. Stephens is just picking his shots. Stephens shoots in and takes Payan down. Stephens has his back once more. Payan stands, and Stephens sticks to him against the fence. Payan grabs the fence to prevent himself from being taken down, but he doesn't lose a point. Stephens takes Payan down in the center of the cage. Big elbow from Stephens.

This was a very good featherweight debut for Stephens. Payan was outmatched in this fight, but he fought all 15 minutes. Stephens bloodied and battered Payan for all three rounds. He will look to get a bigger fight as he acclimates himself to the division.
