Preakness Post Time: When to Watch Action at Pimlico

Dan TalintyreJun 8, 2018

The 2013 Preakness Stakes will get underway at the Pimlico Race Course in Maryland this weekend, and there certainly won't be a shortage of talking points.

Perhaps the biggest of them all will be as to whether Orb can keep his Triple Crown bid alive with a victory in the Preakness to match his Kentucky Derby triumph.

However, even outside of that, there's certainly lots to watch for in this one as the smaller field of nine all look to chalk up a huge victory.

2013 Preakness Stakes: Hottest Talking Points to Watch for

Orb, and the Dream of Racing's Triple Crown

Without a doubt, the hottest talking point coming into this weekend is surrounding Orb, who will have the chance to extend his Triple Crown dream with a victory in the Preakness Stakes.

He was an easy victor at the Kentucky Derby and should be even better than that race here given the shorter track and better running conditions at Pimlico.

Orb has an excellent sprinter's pedigree, and jockey Joel Rosario will no doubt be able to get the best out of him once more here. Which, if he does, will make the colt very tough to run down on the day.

Goldencents, and the Chance to Create History

Goldencents didn't have a good run in the Kentucky Derby—struggling on the wet track and with the incredibly quick pace set by Palace Malice—and dropped away dramatically over the home straight.

However, he'll no doubt be back here and should be more than capable of challenging the field, particularly if he finds the lead early. Which, given that he's drawn a spot next to Orb and Titletown Five, seems more than likely from the star colt.

If Goldencents was to clinch victory on the day, it would be a huge day for all involved and a historical day in the context of horse racing nationwide.

As if there wouldn't already be enough storylines to talk about should he win.

Will Take Charge, and the Prospect of a Huge Upset

I also want to mention Will Take Charge here (currently 12-1) as a genuine prospect to upset Orb on the day, despite the longer odds currently on offer.

The star colt had a strong run at the Kentucky Derby but made a key error coming around the home straight. He has Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith on board for the prestigious race, and with a very appealing pedigree, the colt should be more than capable of challenging Orb throughout this one.

Drawn out wide, Will Take Charge will probably sit back in the field and try to circle them coming around the home turn, something that Orb timed perfectly at Churchill Downs earlier this year. Smith will no doubt learn from that and will have this colt primed for a big run at Pimlico.

Will it be enough to gun down Orb or even Departing on the day?

You'll have to tune in at 6:20 p.m. ET to find out.
