Jets Release Brett Favre: Can You Say Comeback?

Kevin RobertsApr 28, 2009

The Jets have released Brett Favre from the reserve-retired list, effectively allowing the future Hall of Famer to sign with any team.

Despite Favre claiming that he has no intention to play, there are instantly thoughts and rumors swirling about.

Could Favre be Minnesota bound?

After not addressing the quarterback position in the draft, the Vikings are stuck with the winner of a Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosanfels matchup. If Favre were available, why go through the pain of seeing one of these guys win at something?

As for Favre, after once admitting he partially came back to "spite" Ted Thompson, this could be the perfect situation for him to take advantage of.

Favre no longer has anything holding him back, so until the Vikings kick off the season without him under center, this remains a real possibility.

While it still remains unlikely Favre would un-retire for the second straight offseason, the fact that Minnesota didn't draft a quarterback, and him asking to be released, potentially sets things in motion.

After the season ended, the Vikings owner said that the team would have no interest in pursuing Favre. However, this was probably when the Vikings thought Favre either would stay retired, or the Jets wouldn't release him.

After all, why shake the confidence of Tarvaris Jackson and company (more than it has to be). Letting them know you're interested in bringing a 40-year-old legend doesn't exactly keep morale high.

Favre has close ties with a member of the Vikings, Darrell Bevell, and also has a strong connection with Brad Childress. If the front office can be convinced that Favre is a better alternative than what they have, this looks like the most likely scenario.

Still, as a gun for hire, Favre could just continue to play the retirement-card until he finds a team he likes.

After all, who's ever heard of a veteran quarterback who attends mini-camps?
