What To Expect/Not Expect from Arsenal and Manchester United Wednesday

Andrew JordanApr 28, 2009

On Wednesday, two English giants Manchester United and Arsenal will meet in Old Trafford in Manchester in the first of two legs to see which English team will advance to Rome.

Both of these teams have had great seasons and have definitely deserved to be this far in the competition, and here is some recent information about these teams, and what you can or cannot expect from this matchup

Arsène Wenger's side have been a great team as of late, and are now deep in this tournament. In the knockout round, they scraped by Roma, and then beat Villarreal in the quarterfinals.

Several months ago, it seemed that they might not qualify for the Champions League next season, but that probably won't be true, as they are now in fourth place in the EPL.

Manchester United

The defending European champions and possibly the best football team on the planet, Manchester United have looked great so far this year in the Champions League.

They beat Inter Milan, and became the first English team to win at the Estádio do Dragão in Portugal. They are in first place in the EPL, and they clearly have their sites on winning this whole tournament.

What to expect during the match

Arsenal

Expect Arsenal to play an even game with Man Utd all throughout the game. Even without Robin van Persie in the match, Fabregas will definitely play a bigger role alongside Adebayor in the match.

Arsenal will also want to get at least one away goal so they could make it easier at the Emirates. Also don't expect Arsenal to give into  Man Utd during the match as they are huge rivals, and Arsenal doesn't want to lose at all to them.

Manchester United

Manchester United will be playing at Old Trafford during this match, and because they haven't lost a Champions League match there this season, expect them to come out trying to win this game. Also expect Vidic and Ferdinand to both play a strong game on defense, and for many goals to be scored by them during the match.

And they don't want to be down or tied going into the Emirates against Arsenal, so that will make them want to win even more.

What not to expect during the match

Arsenal

Don't expect Arsenal to give into what Man Utd is doing during this match, because that will definitely not happen.

Also, don't think that Arsenal won't try to unleash many strong attacks onto the goal, and try to make it nearly impossible for Man Utd to go to the final. And finally, don't think that Arsenal doesn't want to win this game and the tournament, because they definitely do.

Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson has recently stated that he wants to win more European championships, so don't think that he doesn't want to lose this game.

Also, don't think that United won't concede at least one goal, because Van de Sar and the rest of the defense don't look as good as they normally are the last several weeks. And don't think that United won't score any goals during this game, because they will definitely score more than one goal.

Prediction

Expect Manchester United to come out firing in this game, as they don't want to go to the Emirates and try to win their, something that is almost impossible for a visiting team. Rooney and Ronaldo both will have strong games, and United will probably win this game 3-0, as they don't want to play in a close game in the second leg at the Emirates.

Arsenal will miss having van Persie too much in this important match, and that will be the reason why they lose this match.
