Artavis Scott to Clemson: Tigers Land 4-Star WR Prospect

Ethan GrantJun 8, 2018

Clemson landed a big-time skill position player for its 2014 recruiting class on Tuesday, as Florida high school product and 4-star wide receiver Artavis Scott announced his intention of playing with the Tigers when he heads to the NCAA.

The Gainesville Sun's Zach Abolverdi had the news on Twitter:

Scott is listed as a 5'10", 170-pound receiver on 247Sports, and the scouting site also lists him as the 79th-best player in the nation based on its composite rankings.ย

From East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs, Florida, 247Sports also lists Scott as the No. 8 WR in his class and the No. 8 player in Florida overall. Scott had a strong showing at a Nike Football Training Camp in March, as noted by ESPN's Kipp Adams:

On film, Scott is a shifty, versatile player who plays much bigger than his 5'10" frame would suggest.ย

Lining up in the slot, in the backfield and even spending time on the defensive line for East Lake in some situations, Scott has an excellent first step in everything he does. It's evident when he catches a bubble screen, when he takes a handoff or when he explodes off the line at the snap of the ball.ย

Also accomplished in the open field, Scott is hard to bring down in space. Rarely do you see a defender with the speed, strength or angle to bring him down on the first go. He showed success in the punt return game, too, and Dabo Swinney might look at Scott in that role in the early part of his Clemson career.ย

Clemson beat out a number of different programs vying to make Scott one of their 2014 signees. Home state programs Miami, Florida, Florida State, South Florida and Central Florida all offered Scott, as well as nationally established programs like Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Ole Miss.ย

Swinney is certainly glad to outlast a long list of contenders for Scott's services. He will now take a deep breath while monitoring his senior season at East Lake and waiting for this decision to become official next year.ย

Verbal commitments are non-binding, and the first day a 2014 recruit can sign his National Letter of Intent (NLI) is February 5, 2014 (h/t NCAA.org).ย
